HP Deskjet 1220c and HP Deskjet 1180c Professional Series Printer - Uninstalling the Printer Driver, Microsoft(R) Windows 2000, NT 4.0, and XP

Overview

There are three methods that may be used to uninstall the HP Deskjet 1220c and HP Deskjet 1180c series printer driver from a computer. The correct method to use depends on how the driver was installed and whether a previous attempt to uninstall it failed. The three methods are:

NOTE: Administrator privileges are required to uninstall the printer driver in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.
  • Uninstall the printer driver by using the Uninstaller located in the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c program group.

  • Delete the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer from the Printers window.

  • Manually uninstall the printer driver.

Uninstalling the printer driver using the Uninstaller

An Uninstaller will be created if the printer driver is installed from the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c Starter CD, floppy disks (created with the Make Disk Utility), or a network location using the driver's SETUP.EXE installation software. The Uninstaller will remove all the files from the computer that were loaded by the installation software during a normal or failed installation. The Uninstaller will also remove all the entries created for the HP Deskjet 1220C or HP Deskjet 1180C printer in the WIN.INI file and registry.

  1. Click Start, then click Programs, then click HP Deskjet 1220c Printer or HP Deskjet 1180c Printer , and then click Uninstaller .

  2. Click Remove All (default) and then click Next .

  3. When the message "Uninstall completed" appears, click OK .

    NOTE: If the Uninstaller fails to complete successfully, reinstall the printer driver to connect to LPT1 (the printer does not need to be physically connected to the LPT1 port), and run the Uninstaller again. If possible, restart Windows before installing the printer driver. If the uninstaller still fails to complete successfully, manually uninstall the printer driver by following the steps in the "Manually uninstalling the printer driver" section.

Uninstalling the printer driver without an Uninstaller

If the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c series printer driver was installed using the Add Printer Wizard or Point and Print, an Uninstaller will not be created. To remove the printer driver, delete the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer entry from the Printers window using the instructions that follow.

NOTE: If any HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer entries were created by running the SETUP.EXE installer, the Uninstaller can be used to remove all copies of the printer driver; including those created using the Add Printer or Point and Print installation methods.
  1. Click Start , then click Settings , and then click Printers . For Windows XP, click Start , and then click Printers and Faxes .

  2. Right-click the HP Deskjet 1220c Printer icon and click Delete .

  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion of the printer.

  4. When prompted to delete the printer files, click Yes .

    NOTE: The prompt to delete the printer files will not appear until the last occurrence of the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer is removed from the Printer windows. If there are multiple entries for the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer, repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer entries have been deleted.
  5. If warned that the default printer has been deleted, click OK .

  6. Close the Printers window.

Manually uninstalling the printer driver

If, for some reason, running the Uninstaller or deleting the HP Deskjet 1220c and HP Deskjet 1180c printer icon(s) from the Printers windows does not completely remove the printer driver, the printer driver may be manually uninstalled from the system using the steps below.

NOTE: System administrator privileges are required to manually uninstall the printer in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.

Removing the program group

  1. Right-click Start , click Open All Users , and double-click Programs .

  2. Right-click HP Deskjet 1220c Printer or HP Deskjet 1180c Printer and click Delete .

  3. Click Yes to confirm sending the icon to the Recycle Bin.

  4. Close all the open windows.

Removing the Toolbox icon from the desktop

  1. Right-click the HP Deskjet 1220c Toolbox or HP Deskjet 1180c Toolbox icon located on the Windows Desktop and click Delete .

  2. Click Yes to confirm sending the icon to the Recycle Bin.

Removing the printer from the Printers window

  1. Click Start , then click Settings , and then click Printers .

  2. Right-click the HP Deskjet 1220c Printer or HP Deskjet 1180c Printer icon and click Delete .

  3. When asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes .

  4. When prompted to delete the printer files, click Yes .

    NOTE: The prompt to delete the printer files will not appear until the last occurrence of the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer is removed from the Printer windows. If there are multiple entries for the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer, repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer entries have been deleted.
  5. If warned that the default printer has been deleted, click OK .

  6. Close the Printers window.

Removing the files used by the printer

  1. Click Start and then click Run .

  2. Type NET STOP SPOOLER and press ENTER .

    WARNING: Shutting down the print spooler will abort all spooled print jobs for all the printers controlled by the system.
  3. For Windows NT: click Start , then click Find , and then click Files or Folders . For Windows 2000 and XP: click Start , then click Search , and then click For Files or Folders .

  4. In the Named box, type HPW8* and click Find Now .

  5. When the search results appear at the bottom of the window, click Edit and then click Select All .

  6. Click File and then click Delete . When asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes .

  7. Click Yes to All to delete all of the printer driver program files. Close the Find window.

  8. Click Start and then click Run .

  9. Type NET START SPOOLER and press Enter.

Removing the printer from the registry

The following steps may be used to remove the registry entries for the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c series printer.

WARNING: Use extreme caution when deleting entries from the Windows registry. Once a registry entry is deleted there may be no way to restore it. Deleting the wrong registry entry may prevent some applications, including Microsoft® Windows, from working properly. Before deleting an entry from the registry, ensure that the entry relates specifically to the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c series printer.
  1. Click Start and then click Run .

  2. In the Open box, type REGEDIT and click OK .

    CAUTION: Before any entries are deleted from the registry, it is extremely important to create a backup of the registry by completing Step 3.
  3. Click Registry, then click Export Registry File , type HP in the File name box and click Save . This will create a backup of the Windows Registry named HP.REG that can be used to restore the Registry.

  4. In the Registry Editor, click Edit and then click Find .

  5. In the Find what box, type 1220C or 1180C and click Find Next .

  6. When an entry is found, make sure that it relates to the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer. If so, press Delete on the keyboard and then click Yes to confirm the deletion. To continue searching for additional entries, press the F3 key.

    NOTE: Other applications may have registry entries that contain the value 1220C or 1180 . Before deleting the entry, make sure it references the printer. If you are unsure whether a registry entry is for the HP Deskjet 1220c or HP Deskjet 1180c printer, do not delete the entry.
  7. Continue searching until a message indicates that the search of the registry is complete and then click OK .

  8. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 and search for HPW8 instead of 1220c or 1180c.

  9. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 and search for 82692260-e189-11d2-818a-080009a9c35c .

    NOTE: 82692260-e189-11d2-818a-080009a9c35c is the Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) for the product. To reduce the time required to search the registry, you may search for the first few characters in the GUID (e.g. 82692260-e189). However, make sure any entries that are found completely match the full GUID before deleting it.
  10. Exit the Registry Editor . Click Registry and click Exit .
