HP Jetdirect Download Manager 3.x - Using Download Manager to Upgrade HP Jetdirect Firmware
NOTE: On this download page, there are links to the Download Manger as well as to the Ethernet or Token Ring firmware image files in a bundled package. These are useful in a situation, for example, where you might want to download these to a laptop and then use that laptop at a remote site where there is no Internet access from the local network. See the “Local Mode” section below.
When HP Download Manager starts, a series of dialog boxes leads you through the upgrade process.
The following gives an overview of the standard firmware upgrade process:

Selecting the operating mode
For the most current firmware information and images, use this option. In Internet mode, the HP Download Manager accesses the HP Web site to obtain a catalog of the latest firmware images for supported devices. Later, when an upgrade begins, the required firmware images (.DLD files) are downloaded from the HP Web site to a special local folder on the computer
When the Firmware Catalog is obtained, the next step is the discovery.
In Local mode, HP Download Manager creates a firmware catalog by inventorying the firmware images already stored on the computer’s hard drive. These images may have been stored either by means of a previous HP Download Manager session, by downloading the firmware image bundles, or by manually copying firmware images from one computer to another.

Later, when an upgrade begins, the required firmware images (.DLD files) are obtained directly from the local folder on the computer. For a default installation, these .DLD files should appear in this directory:
\..\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Download Manager\Upgrades\Jetdirect
Selecting discovery options
After the operating mode is specified and the firmware catalog is established, the HP Download Manager will prompt to perform a device discovery. In a device discovery, the application searches the network for supported devices. There are two types of device discovery:
This option is the simpler of the two and will discover devices on each network (such as each NIC) of the computer. Automatic Discovery will use the host PC's settings to determine the network adapters and protocols that will be used to discover the network. A combination of discovery methods may be selected for Automatic Discovery, such as IP broadcast or multicast, or IPX SNMP broadcast or GSQ.
This discovery option is more detailed and complex, but it has the advantage of having more control over the discovery process. You must specify the addresses or portions of the network you wish to discover. Individual addresses, address ranges, and subnets, or even address files that contain the desired addresses, ranges, and subnets.
As part of the discovery process, the current firmware image of each upgradable device is automatically compared with the most up-to-date firmware image in the firmware catalog. Print servers are then categorized as either up-to-date, needing an upgrade, or not upgradable.

Automatic Discovery methods
By default, the discovery will be performed through each network adapter detected on the PC. If the PC has the TCP/IP protocol installed, both an IP multicast discovery with one hop and an IP broadcast discovery will be done. If a PC has the IPX protocol installed, both an IPX broadcast and a General Services Query (GSQ) with one hop will be done.
If these methods are changed, they become the new defaults for automatic discovery and will be used whenever you select the Automatic Discovery option without selecting Discovery Methods.
The following are the choices for the automatic discovery methods. Select one or both of IP and IPX networking protocols.
Broadcast Discovery: An SNMP broadcast packet is sent over the local network (not through routers) to all devices, using destination address 255.255.255.255.
Multicast Discovery: A multicast SLPpacket is sent over the network to the HP-assigned multicast address 18.104.22.168. (This includes only supported HP devices.) This packet can go through multicast routers. You may change the limit to the number of hops (from 1 to 15).
SNMP Broadcast Discovery: An SNMP broadcast packet is sent over the local network (not through routers) to all devices.
GSQ Discovery: A General Service Query is sent over the network, looking for HP Jetdirect Services. You may change the number of hops (from 0 to 15).
Custom Discovery methods
The Custom Discovery Settings are added together to define the network and the discovery will notinclude the standard IP/IPX discovery. Therefore, use any combination of these custom settings to make up the overall custom discovery method.
Other Discovery Report messages might include the following:
No devices found
If the discovery completes and finds no devices, the No Devices Found window will display, notifying that the network connections and discovery settings need to be checked.
No upgradable devices found
If no devices needing an upgrade are discovered, the No Upgradable Devices Found window will be displayed. According to the firmware catalog used, all of the HP Jetdirect devices already have up-to-date firmware, or their firmware status is unknown.
When selecting Yes from the Discovery Report window, HP Download Manager 3.x will check for locks on any of the devices to be upgraded.
If any locks are found, the SNMP Security Lock error window will display. Click OK to continue to upgrade all the devices without locks, or click Cancel to return to the Hewlett-Packard Jetdirect Firmware Download Manager window.
No locks found
If there are no locked devices or the decision has been made to upgrade the unlocked devices, the Upgrade Options window displays.
A firmware upgrade can be started from the Discovery Report window as described above, or it can be started from the main window at any time. To do this, use the following instructions:
When the upgrade begins, the Upgrade Progress window appears. This window offers the status and progress of the upgrades.
The upgrade process requires the firmware image for each of the devices to be on the PC performing the upgrade. HP Download Manager 3.x can simultaneously download images from the Web and upgrade one device at a time. The order in which the images are downloaded from the Web, and the order in which the upgrades are performed, is random. HP Download Manager 3.x is optimized to use the images that have already been downloaded to the PC before waiting for those images yet to be downloaded.
The Upgrade Progress window allows for stopping the upgrade by clicking Stop Upgrade . The current upgrade will be completed before the upgrade process is terminated. The Upgrade Cancelled error window will ask to confirm the cancellation.
When the upgrade process is complete, the Firmware Upgrade Results window is presented. This window summarizes the results of the upgrade process by displaying the number of devices selected for upgrade, the number successfully upgraded, and the number of failures. The specific devices are saved in the Upgrade Results folder in the Hewlett-Packard Jetdirect Firmware Download Manager window. Select the View the Upgrade Results folder now box before clicking OK .
Scheduling an upgrade
Scheduling the upgrade to begin later makes the Awaiting Scheduled Upgrade window appear. Click Minimize , Cancel , or Upgrade Now .
Discovery and upgrade complete
The Hewlett-Packard Jetdirect Firmware Download Manager window appears when the discovery and upgrade are complete. This window is modeled after the Microsoft Windows File Explorer. The left pane or “status view” pane shows a tree control to provide different views of the information. The HP Jetdirect devices are grouped and organized to assist in identifying the devices on the network. The right pane is the “results” pane. This pane shows lists of devices that correspond to the scope criteria selected in the status view pane. The menu bar on this window contains buttons and drop-down menus to allow access to all the functions in HP Download Manager 3.x.
