HP LaserJet Printers - AutoCAD 14, Windows Driver Selection and Configuration

ISSUE: How do I configure an HP LaserJet printer to print using AutoCAD 14?
SOLUTION: AutoCAD 14 can be configured to select specific paper sizes, shades, or pen widths when using either the HP-GL/2 driver or the System Printer ADI 4.3 driver.

Refer to the following information to configure AutoCAD 14 to select paper sizes, shades, or pen widths when using either the HP-GL/2 printer driver or the System Printer ADI 4.3 driver.

Introduction

This information allows AutoCAD release 14 for Windows to produce successful plots on HP LaserJet printers.

Windows driver information for AutoCAD 14

One of the following internal drivers should be selected for AutoCAD Release 14 for Windows:

  • System Printer ADI 4.3 by Autodesk.

  • Hewlett-Packard HP-GL/2 devices ADI 4.3 - for AutoDesk by HP.

NOTE: LJ133EN.EXE can be downloaded from the Hewlett-Packard Web site and installed if the ability to print raster images or to print on different paper sizes (for example, Legal) is required.

The features of each driver are listed in the following table:

The System Printer provides higher quality gray scales or shading when configured for dithered output than when configured on the HP-GL/2 driver but at reduced speeds. The HP-GL/2 driver provides higher speeds with reduced grayscale quality.

Configuration of AutoCAD 14 Windows using the HP-GL/2 driver

Do the following to configure AutoCAD 14 Windows using the HP-GL/2 driver:

  1. At the AutoCAD command prompt, type CONFIG.

  2. Select New.

  3. Select Hewlett-Packard HP-GL/2 devices, ADI 4.3 for AutoDesk by HP, and press OK.

NOTE: NR in the printer name stands for Non-Raster.
NOTE: LJ133EN.EXE can be downloaded from the Hewlett-Packard Web site and installed if the ability to print raster images or to print on various paper sizes (for example, Legal) is required.
  4. Select HP LaserJet 4 - NR or select HP LaserJet (11 x 17, A3) if the LJ133en.exe is downloaded. Then continue until prompted for the port.

  5. Select the appropriate port. If connected through a jet direct card, select parallel , and type the name of the jet direct port. If already configured for a System Printer, an AutoCAD information screen may appear stating that the ADI driver will be rerouted to use the Windows spooler to avoid conflicts. Select OK .

  6. It will then provide a list of defaults. Make the appropriate selections, and continue.

  7. Select OK at the AutoCAD preferences screen.

  3. Select OK .

How to shade when configured for the HP-GL/2 driver

Do the following:

  1. At the command prompt, type HPCONFIG.

  2. Select Pens .

  3. Once the Pens screen is up, select the pen number to shade (1-255).

    • Check Update Pen Tables On Device Change to update pen assignments when choosing a new printer.

  4. Continue through the selections until the Preferences screen appears, and select OK .

How to select paper size when configured for the system printer

When configured for the System Printer, AutoCAD will default to the paper size that is selected in the Control Panel within Windows. If the size is to be changed within AutoCAD, follow these steps:

  1. Type Plot at the command line in AutoCAD.
