ISSUE: How do I print on custom paper sizes?
SOLUTION: This document describes how to print on custom paper sizes.
NOTE: If an older printer driver is installed on the computer, the information in this document may not apply. To check the driver version, access the printer driver's properties, and then double-click the HP logo or click the About button. If the version number does not match the version listed on HP's Web site, update the printer driver.

HP LaserJet 4000, 4050, and 4100 series printers support the following ranges of custom paper sizes:

  • Width: 76 to 216 mm (3 inches to 8.5 inches)

  • Height: 127 to 356 mm (5 inches to 14 inches)

HP LaserJet 5000 / 5100 printers support the following custom paper sizes for tray 1:

  • Width: 3 inches to 12.28 inches

  • Height: 5 inches to 18.5 inches

HP LaserJet 5000 / 5100 printers support the following custom paper sizes for the optional trays:

  • Width: 5.8 inches to 11 inches

  • Height: 8.2 inches to 17 inches

NOTE: Width is the side-to-side dimension of paper as it is placed in the printer. Height (length) is from the leading edge entering the printer to the trailing edge. For best results, feed the short edge into the printer first.

To print these custom sizes correctly, the application and printing system must send these printers the proper commands for paper selection and formatting. Software applications differ in custom size capabilities. The same application in different Windows operating systems may send different commands to the printer. The following steps generate the most consistent results for printing custom paper sizes.

  3. In WordPerfect, click Format, Page , and Paper Size .

  4. Select Create .

The new custom size will appear under paper size. Other applications should have similar paper size choices. If the printer selects and pulls the correct paper size, but the print is not positioned correctly, check the application for the Feed Method Option (left, center, or right). The HP LaserJet printer should be set to Center Feed. Try setting the custom size from the control panel of the printer.

  8. Press the ITEM key until "Y dimension = " is displayed. Input the correct long edge dimension using the value key and press the SELECT button. An * should appear in the printer display to the right of the short edge.

If the printer prompts to load a certain size of paper, or the printer prints on another size after following the above procedure, the driver or application is sending this request to the printer and overriding the printer's control panel settings. In this case, select the desired size and adjust the margins within the application to format the page correctly.
