HP LaserJet 4050 Printers - 79.00FE Errors are Displayed on the Control Panel

ISSUE: The printer displays a 79 00FE error on the control panel. If the error is displayed when printing a color palette sample from Adobe(R) InDesign, refer to document number bpl08093.

79 errors that occur with the HP LaserJet 4050 printer and the envelope feeder usually fall into one of the following scenarios:

  • The envelope feeder runs out of envelopes during a print job and a 79.00FE error occurs.

  • A 79.00FE error occurs when powering up a printer that has an envelope feeder attached.

  • An older firmware version is being used.

SOLUTION: Isolate the printer by turning the printer off and removing any accessories, such as memory or font DIMMs, cables, envelope feeder, and EIO devices like the HP Jetdirect card or hard disk.
NOTE: Ensure that an HP LaserJet 4050 printer driver is set as default. Any of the HP LaserJet 4050 drivers can be used (PCL6, 5e, or PS). Do not use a substitute driver like the HP LaserJet 4/4 Plus, or an HP LaserJet 4000 and 5000 printer driver.

Perform a cold reset by doing the following:

  1. Turn the printer off.

  2. Remove all communication cables so that only the power cable is connected.

  3. Remove the Jetdirect card, if installed.

  4. Remove any other accessories, such as the envelope feeder.

  5. Hold down the green "GO" button.

  6. Turn the printer on.

  7. When the words "Cold Reset" appear in the display, release the green "GO" button.

  8. When "Offline" appears in the display, press the green "GO" button. "Ready" should appear in the display.

    NOTE: If the words "Cold Reset" do not appear in the display, hold the "GO" button down until you hear the motors rotate. The words "Restoring Factory Settings" will appear in the display if the "Cold Reset" was performed successfully.
  9. Turn the printer off once the printer displays the “Ready” message.

  10. Reinstall each of the above-mentioned components, one at a time, turning the printer on and off again each time a component is installed.

  11. Continue installing and power-cycling until all accessories are installed and the printer is at a “Ready” state.

  12. If it is determined that one of the components is responsible for the 79.00FE error, refer to next.

  13. If the printer will not return to a “Ready” state after removing all of the components and performing the cold reset, try a different power source by moving the printer to a different location and plugging the power cord directly into the wall.

  14. If the printer continues to display the 79.00FE error, upgrade the firmware. A firmware DIMM can be obtained from the HP Parts Store at http://www.hp.com/buy/parts . Version 6.36 Firmware DIMM is Part Number C4251-67905; however, part numbers are subject to change without notice.

  15. If the printer still continues to display the error, contact HP for further assistance.
