HP LaserJet 1200 Product Family - Hardware Setup Verification

This document explains the process of ensuring that the HP LaserJet 1200 product and software are correctly set-up and installed.

Device setup verification

This section lists each troubleshooting objective, followed by the verification steps necessary to ensure the HP LaserJet 1200 product is correctly installed.

Power On is successful

When the HP LaserJet 1200 product is connected to a grounded power source, the printer motor should rotate for approximately six seconds. If the Power On does not occur as documented here, try the following:

  1. Remove the power cable from the power strip and plug it directly into a wall outlet.

  2. Make sure the power cable is functional.

  3. Make sure a print cartridge is properly installed.

  4. Make sure the printer door is closed.

  5. Make sure paper is loaded in the paper input bin.

If everything above is verified and the product still does not successfully turn on, contact HP Customer Care for additional assistance.

The HP LaserJet 1200 product is ready

  1. Verify that the Control Panel does not display an error light pattern.

  2. If it does, see the User Guide or Service Manual for steps to correct the problem.

Self-test and configuration page

  1. Print a self-test report from the HP LaserJet 1200 product:

    1. Make sure the printer is in the READY state.

    2. Press and release the GO button on the printer control panel. The HP LaserJet 1200 product prints the report.

  2. Verify that:

    • The control panel lights are not flashing an error pattern.

    • The reports print without paper feed problems.

    • The reports print without print quality problems.

  3. If connected to the HP LaserJet 1200 product through an HP Jetdirect print server, print a configuration report from the HP Jetdirect print server by pressing TEST on the HP Jetdirect unit.

NOTE: If the self-test (or internal report) does not print, resolve any error light patterns. (See the Service Manual or User Guide for a list of patterns and their solutions.)

The print server is operational

  1. Attach the printer to the HP Jetdirect 175X and attach the HP Jetdirect 175X to the network (see Figure 1).

    Figure 1: HP Jetdirect 175X

  2. Press the TEST button on the rear panel of the print server to print a configuration page. (The information on the print server configuration page reveals the status of the network and the HP Jetdirect 175X print server. If a configuration page will print, the hardware is working correctly.)

    • Check the power/status LED to verify that the configuration page is in the process of printing. If the page never appears on the printer (or if it is unreadable), press and hold the TEST button to change the page description language (PDL). Then press the TEST button once to request the page. Repeat if necessary.

  3. Review the page for status and error messages. Verify that network and HP Jetdirect settings are correct for the network.

The copy function is operational

Place the reports into the document scanner input bin face up and press the copy button to copy them to the printer. Verify that:

  • Reports feed smoothly through the document scanner path.

  • Copies print without print quality problems.
