HP LaserJet 1200 Series Product - First Time or Initial Software Installation for Windows 98 and Me on a USB Port

The HP LaserJet 1200 product software ships on CD-ROM. On Windows systems, the Setup program installs the HP LaserJet 1200 product software from the CD-ROM onto the hard disk and updates Windows files. This document explains how to install the software for Windows 98 and Me USB installation.
NOTE: If the CD-ROM is lost after opening the package, the software can be downloaded from the HP Web site. Click here to go to the Drivers and Downloads Web site at http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html. Select the download Drivers and Software information radio button, type the printer name or model number in the text box, and then press ENTER . Select the appropriate operating system to locate the drivers available for download for this product. Additionally, this Web site will provide instructions for purchasing a new CD-ROM for the product where available.
NOTE: The HP LaserJet 1200 and 1200se ships with one CD-ROM (CD1) in the box. The HP LaserJet 1220 and 1220se ships with two CD-ROMs (CD1 and CD2) in the box. The CD2 is used only for a Macintosh copier/scanner installation.

Minimum system requirements

  • Windows 98 or Me (Millennium Edition) operating system

  • For printing only: A computer with a 486 33 MHz processor or better, with 16 MB of RAM and 15 MB or more of free hard-disk space

  • For the printer with additional copier/scanner accessory: Windows 98: A computer with a Pentium 90 MHz processor or better, 32 MB of RAM, and 160 MB or more of free hard-disk space. Windows Me: A computer with a Pentium 90 MHz processor or better, with 64 MB of RAM, and 160 MB or more of free hard-disk space.

  • A USB port.

  • A 2X or above CD-ROM drive (required for installation).

USB cable specifications

The HP LaserJet 1200 series product uses an USB-1f compliant full-speed cable. The USB specification limits the length of a cable for full speed devices to five meters (a little less than 16 feet, 5 inches).

NOTE: The HP LaserJet 1200 series product with the copier/scanner accessory attached must be connected directly from the printer to the PC. If the USB port has another device attached to it between the printer and the PC, disconnect the device or use another USB port in the PC.

Installing the software for Windows 98 and Me operating systems

The preferred method for installing the HP LaserJet 1200 series product software on Windows systems is by installing hardware first (Plug and Play) with the USB cable connected from the printer to the computer. The preferred and alternate methods are both listed below.

Windows 98 preferred method - hardware first install

A single installer is used for both the HP LaserJet 1200 and 1220 series products.

  1. Verify that a self-test/configuration page can be generated from the printer. To print a self-test/configuration page from the printer, press the GO button on the front of the printer.

  2. Close all applications and TSR programs before running the Software Installation.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the Ctrl , Alt , and Delete keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task at the bottom of the window.

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed except for Explorer and Systray.

  3. Verify that the USB cable is connected to the printer, and then connect the printer USB cable to the computer. The New Hardware Found message screen will briefly appear, followed by the Add New Hardware Wizard screen. Click Next to continue.

  4. On the Add New Hardware Wizard screen, select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) , then click Next .

  5. Remove the checkmarks next to Floppy disk drives , CD-ROM drive , and Microsoft Window Updates . Make certain there is a checkmark next to Specify a location . If the checkmarks are not removed from the floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, and Microsoft Window Updates, the software will not install correctly. If a screen appears with the message Windows has found multiple software packages that should work for this device or Windows was unable to install a driver or choose from another package , click Back and remove the checkmarks from those boxes.

  6. Under Specify a location , type X:\98me_usb (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive). Find the CD1 HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD-ROM that came in the box with the HP LaserJet 1200 series product and place it in the computer’s CD-ROM drive. Click Next to continue.

  7. Windows is now ready to install the best driver for this device. Location of driver should read: X:\98me_usb\hppcusb0.inf (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive). Click Next to continue.

  8. Click Finish to complete the Plug and Play and to begin the HP LaserJet 1200 series product software installation. At this time the Dot4, Dot4 Print 1284.4 compatible printer, Dot4 USB, and HP DOT4 USB device ports will install.

  9. When the autorun HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD Browser screen appears, (this may take a few seconds before starting), click Software Installation . If the autorun HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD Browser screen does not appear, click Start , then Run . In the Open: field, type X:\setup.exe where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

  10. To install the HP LaserJet 1200, 1200se, 1220, or 1220se software and driver, follow the instructions on the screen.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the installation.

    2. On the HP Software License Agreement screen, click Yes .

    3. On the Model screen, click the model being set up. The HP LaserJet 1200 printer is highlighted and appears in the Description box by default. Leave the HP LaserJet 1200 selected if just the printer was purchased. Select HP LaserJet 1220 if the printer with the copier/scanner accessory was purchased. If in doubt, refer to the box that the printer came in for the correct model. Click Next to continue.

    4. The HP LaserJet 1200 or 1220 Series Setup screen will appear and the setup will begin.

    5. On the Finish screen, click Installation Details to check which components have been installed. To deselect actions to perform when setup is finished, click the checkmark to remove it. Click Finish to complete the installation.

    6. On the Restart Needed screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now to restart the computer. Click OK .

  11. Remove the HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD1 from the CD-ROM drive.

  12. After restarting into Windows 98, the following may occur:

    • If installing only the HP LaserJet 1200 printer, installation is complete.

    • If installing the HP LaserJet 1220 printer with copier/scanner accessory, Application-linking screens may appear. Make the desired selections. An example would be that the Select Email Link screen might appear. Select the appropriate e-mail application and click OK .

  13. On the Finishing Setup screen, click OK .

Windows Me (Millennium Edition) preferred method - hardware first install

Use a single installer for both the HP LaserJet 1200 and 1220 product.

  1. Verify that a self-test/configuration page can be generated from the printer. To print a self-test/configuration page from the printer, press the GO button on the front of the printer.

  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Installation.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the Ctrl , Alt , and Delete keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task at the bottom of the window.

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed except for Explorer and Systray.

  3. Verify that the USB cable is connected to the printer, then connect the printer USB cable to the computer. The New Hardware Found screen will briefly appear, followed by the Add New Hardware Wizard screen. Click Next to continue.

  4. On the Add New Hardware Wizard screen, select Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), then click Next .

  5. Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) .

  6. Remove the checkmark next to Removable Media (Floppy, CD-ROM) . Make certain there is a checkmark next to Specify a location . If the checkmark is not removed from the first box, the software will not install correctly. If a screen appears with Windows has found multiple software packages that should work for this device or Windows was unable to install a driver or choose from another package , click Back and remove the checkmarks from Removable Media (Floppy, CD-ROM) .

  7. Under Specify a location , type X:\98me_usb (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive). Find the CD1 HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD-ROM that came in the box with the HP LaserJet 1200 series product and place it in the computer’s CD-ROM drive. Click Next to continue.

  8. Windows is now ready to install the best driver for this device. Location of driver should read: X:\98me_usb\hppcusb0.inf (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive). Click Next to continue.

  9. Click Finish to complete the Plug and Play and to begin the HP LaserJet 1200 series product software installation. (At this time the Dot4, Dot4 Print 1284.4 compatible printer, Dot4 USB, and HP DOT4 USB device ports will install.)

  12. Remove the HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD1 from the CD-ROM drive.

  13. After restarting into Windows Me, the following may occur:

    • If installing only the HP LaserJet 1200 printer, installation is complete.

    • If installing the HP LaserJet 1220 printer with copier/scanner accessory, Application-linking screens may appear. Make the desired selections. An example would be that the Select Email Link screen might appear. Select the appropriate e-mail application and click OK .

  14. On the Finishing Setup screen, click OK .

Windows 98 and Me alternate method - software first install

Use a single installer for both the HP LaserJet 1200 and 1220 products.

  1. Verify that the USB cable is connected to the printer. Verify that a self-test/configuration page can be generated from the printer. To print a self-test/configuration page from the printer, press the GO button on the front of the printer.

  2. Connect the USB cable to the printer. If the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  3. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Installation.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the Ctrl , Alt , and Delete keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task at the bottom of the window.

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed except for Explorer and Systray.

  4. Find the CD1 HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD-ROM that came in the box with the HP LaserJet 1200 series product and place it in the computer’s CD-ROM drive.

  5. When the autorun HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD Browser screen appears (this may take a few seconds before starting), click Software Installation . If the autorun HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD Browser screen does not appear, click Start , then Run . In the Open: field, type X:\setup.exe where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

  6. To install the HP LaserJet 1200, 1200se, 1220, or 1220se software and driver, follow the instructions on the screen.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the installation.

    2. On the HP Software License Agreement screen, click Yes .

    3. On the Type of Connection screen, Connect to this computer should be selected. Click Next to continue.

    4. On the Select a Port screen, USB should be selected. Click Next to continue.

    5. On the Model screen, click the model being set up. The HP LaserJet 1200 printer is highlighted and appears in the Description box by default. Leave the HP LaserJet 1200 selected if just the printer was purchased. Select HP LaserJet 1220 if the printer with the copier/scanner accessory was purchased. If in doubt, refer to the box that the printer came in for the correct model. Click Next to continue.

    6. On the Type of Installation screen, make sure Typical Installation is selected, then click Next .

    7. The HP LaserJet 1200 or 1220 Series Setup screen will appear and the setup will begin.

    8. On the Finish screen, click Installation Details to check which components have been installed. To deselect actions to perform when setup is finished, click the checkmark to remove it. Click Finish to complete the installation.

    9. On the Restart Needed screen, Yes, I want to restart my computer now should be selected. Click OK .

  7. Remove the HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD1 from the CD-ROM drive.

  8. After restarting into Windows 98 or Me, the following should occur:

    • Plug and Play will begin and the New Hardware Found screen will appear. (At this time the Dot4, Dot4 Print 1284.4 compatible printer, Dot4 USB, and HP Dot4 USB device ports will install.)

    • If installing only the HP LaserJet 1200 printer, installation is complete.

    • If installing the HP LaserJet 1220 printer with the copier/scanner accessory, Application-linking screens may appear. Make the desired selections. An example would be the Select Email Link screen might appear. Select the appropriate e-mail application and click OK .

  9. On the Finishing Setup screen, click OK .

  10. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Settings , and Printers . If the HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL6 or HP LaserJet 1220 Series PCL 6 printer icon or listing appears, the software is completely installed. If the printer’s icon or listing does not appear, perform the following steps:

    1. Double-click Add Printer . The Add Printer Wizard screen should appear. Click Next .

    2. Select Local printer and click Next .

    3. Under Manufacturer , select HP ; and under Printers scroll to the bottom of the list and select HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL6 or HP LaserJet 1220 Series PCL6 . Click Next .

    4. Keep existing driver (recommended) should be selected. Click Next .

    5. Under Available ports , select Dot4_00x (x should be the highest number of DOT4 ports) and click Next .

    6. The Printer name should read HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL6 or HP LaserJet 1220 Series PCL6 . Under Do you want your Windows-based program to use this driver as the default printer? Select Yes , and click Next .

    7. Under Would you like to print a test page? Select Yes, recommended , then click Finish .

    8. The printer’s icon or printers name should appear in the Printers screen.

    9. Under Did the test page print correctly , click Yes and close the Printers screen. Installation is complete.
