HP LaserJet 4200 and 4300 Series Printers - Installing the Envelope-Feeder Accessory

Introduction

This document provides the steps for installing and removing the optional envelope-feeder accessory, which can hold up to 75 envelopes, depending on the type and size of the envelope. This envelope feeder fits several printer models; the printer in use might not be shown.

This document also provides information about the accessory lights.

Installation steps

Use the steps in the following table to install the optional 500-sheet feeder.

  1. Remove the orange tape from the envelope feeder.

  1. Rotate the envelope-feeder tray to the open position.

  1. Remove all of the foam and packing material.

  1. Open tray 1 on the printer.

  1. Remove the plastic envelope-entrance cover from inside the printer.

NOTE Replace the cover when the envelope feeder is not attached.

  1. Turn the printer power off.

  1. Insert the envelope feeder firmly into the printer until it latches into position. Pull outward on the envelope feeder to make sure that it is securely in place.

  2. Turn the printer power on.

  1. Lift the envelope weight. Fold down the envelope-feeder tray.

  1. Squeeze the release lever on the left envelope guide and slide the guides apart.

  1. Load envelopes with the seams down and the postage-end toward the printer. Gently push the envelopes in as far as they will go.

  1. Adjust the guides to touch the envelopes without bending them.

NOTE Make sure that the envelopes are not stacked higher than the arrows on the guides.

  1. Lower the envelope weight onto the envelopes.

  1. When the envelope-size prompt appears on the control panel display, use (Up Arrow) or (Down Arrow) to scroll to the correct envelope size, and then press (Select) to save the setting.

  1. To take advantage of all the envelope feeder functions, the printer driver on the host computer for the printer must be configured to recognize the envelope feeder.

    To configure the printer driver for Macintosh computers, go to Step 16.

    To configure the printer driver for Windows computers, use the following steps:

    1. At the host computer, open the Properties window for the printer.

    2. On the Configure tab, select the checkbox for the envelope feeder.

    3. Continue with Step 17.

  1. Use the following steps to configure the printer driver for Macintosh computers.

    NOTE The PPD for the printer must be installed on the Macintosh computer in order to make the changes.

For Macintosh OS 9.x:
  1. Select the printer icon on the desktop, click the Printing menu at the top of the screen, and then click Change Setup .

  2. Under Installable Options , click Change , and then select the accessory.

  3. Go to To and select Installed for that accessory.

  4. Click OK .

  5. Continue with Step 17

For Macintosh OS 10.1.x:
  1. Open the Print Center , highlight the printer that has the new accessory, and then click Delete .

  2. Click the Add Printer button and highlight the appropriate printer.

  3. Use Auto Select for the printer model.

  4. Click Add .

    NOTE

    The Print Center OS 10.1.x will not allow the accessory to be added manually. The operating system has to detect the accessory by deleting the printer and then adding it back.

  5. Continue with Step 17.

NOTE
At this time, the envelope feeder does not work under Macintosh OS 10.2.x. This is under investigation by HP.

  1. To verify that installation is complete, print a configuration page. At the printer control panel, press (Select) to open the printer menus. Use (Up Arrow) or (Down Arrow) to scroll to INFORMATION, and then press (Select). Scroll to PRINT CONFIGURATION and then press (Select).

  1. Make sure that the configuration page lists the envelope feeder as an installed accessory. If the envelope feeder is not listed, see the printer User's Guide on the CD-ROM that came with the printer for troubleshooting information.

Removing the envelope feeder

Use the steps in the following table to remove the envelope feeder.

  1. Press the envelope-feeder release button (1) and pull outward on the envelope feeder (2).

  1. Install the plastic envelope-entrance cover if the printer will be used without the envelope feeder.

Control panel messages for accessories

The following table explains some of the accessory-related messages on the control panel display.

Paper has either jammed in the printer or has been caught in a tray or accessory.
  1. Open the tray indicated by the message.

  2. Clear all paper from the area. If necessary, remove the print cartridge, duplexer, trays, stacker, or stapler/stacker accessory.

  3. If the message persists, check for paper in all other areas.

CAUTION:
Ensure that all jammed paper is removed before closing the cover or tray. Open and close the top cover to clear the message. See the printer User's Guide for information on clearing jams.
66.00.15 EXTERNAL DEVICE FAILURE
For help press (Help)
An error occurred in an external paper-handling accessory.
  1. Turn the printer power off.

  2. Check that the accessory is properly seated on and connected to the printer, without any gaps between the printer and the accessory. If the accessory uses cables, disconnect and reconnect them.

  3. Turn the printer power on.

If the error reappears, record the message, and contact HP Customer Support.

  1. Turn the printer power off.
