Installing Windows printing system software for direct connections

This section explains how to install the printing system software for Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

When installing the printing software in a direct-connect environment, always install the software before connecting the parallel or universal serial bus (USB) cable. If the parallel or USB cable was connected before the software installed, click here to go to "Installing the software after the parallel or USB cable has been connected" below.

Either a parallel or USB cable can be used for the direct connection. The parallel and USB cables cannot be connected at the same time. Use an IEEE 1284-compatible cable or a standard 2-meter USB cable.

Windows 95 and NT 4.0 do not support USB cable connections.

If installation fails, reinstall the software. If this fails, check the installation notes and Readme files on the printer CD-ROM or the flyer that came in the printer box. Or, click here to go to the HP support Web site at http://www.hp.com/support/lj2300 for help or more information.

Installing the printing system software

Use the following steps to install the printing system software for direct connections.

  1. Close all software programs that are open or running.

If the Welcome screen does not open, start it by using the following procedure:

    1. On the Start menu, click Run .

    2. Type the following (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive):

      X:\SETUP

    3. Click OK .

  3. When prompted, click Install Printer and follow the instructions on the computer screen.

Installing Windows printing system software for networks

The software on the printer CD-ROM supports network installation with a Microsoft network (except Windows 3.1x ). For network installation on other operating systems, click here to go to the HP support Web site at http://www.hp.com/support/lj2300.

The HP Jetdirect print server that is included with the HP LaserJet 2300n, HP LaserJet 2300dn printer, or HP LaserJet 2300dtn printer has a 10/100Base-TX network port. If an HP Jetdirect print server with another type of network port is needed, click here to go to "Ordering supplies and accessories" below.

The installer does not support printer installation or printer object creation on Novell servers. It supports only direct-mode network installations between Windows computers and a printer. To install a printer and create objects on a Novell server, use an HP utility (such as HP Web Jetadmin or HP Install Network Printer Wizard) or a Novell utility (such as NWadmin).

If installation fails, reinstall the software. If this fails, check the installation notes and Readme files on the printer CD-ROM or the flyer that came in the printer box. Or, click here to go to the HP support Web site at http://www.hp.com/support/lj2300 for help or more information.

Installing the printing system software

Use the following steps to install the printing system software for networks.

  1. If installing the software on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, be sure to have administrator privileges.

  2. Make sure that the HP Jetdirect print server is configured correctly for the network by printing a configuration page (click here to go to the steps for printing a configuration page) . On the second page, locate the printer Internet Protocol (IP) address. This address might be needed to complete network installation.

  3. Close all software programs that are open or running.

  4. Insert the printer CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

If the welcome screen does not open, start it by using the following procedure:

    1. On the Start menu, click Run .

    2. Type the following (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive):

      X:\SETUP

    3. Click OK .

  5. Click Finish when installation has completed.

  6. Restart the computer.

  7. Print a page from any software program to make sure that the software is correctly installed.

Setting up a Windows computer to use the network printer using Windows-sharing

If the printer is directly connected to a computer using a parallel cable, It is possible to share the printer on the network so that other network users can print to it.

See the Windows documentation to enable Windows-sharing. After the printer is shared, install the printer software on all computers that share the printer.

Configuration options

The Configure tab in the printer driver is used to tell the printer driver about the hardware configuration of the printer. Open the printer driver from the Printers folder by clicking Properties .

Figure 1: Configure tab

The printer image in the lower-right portion of the Configure tab represents the current physical configuration of the printer and corresponds to its configuration data, either obtained automatically through bidirectional communication or configured manually. The printer image shown in the illustration might differ, depending on the model number and the installed accessory devices.

The following table explains the configuration options.

Option
Description
Printer Model group box
In this group box, the driver title remains HP LaserJet 2300 for all models. Selecting another printer bundle makes the appropriate changes to other configuration options on the tab.
See "Configuration defaults" below for the configuration defaults in effect for the different models.
Paper Handling Options group box
This group box provides options for configuring most of the paper-handling device features.
Duplexing Unit
Select this option if a duplexing unit is installed in the printer. When it is selected, additional controls appear in the Document Options group box on the Finishing tab. Unlike most options in this group box, the Duplexing Unit option does not affect the printer image because the duplexing unit is contained within the printer. To print on both sides, click Print from the program, click Properties , click the Finishing tab, and then click Print on Both Sides .
Allow Manual Duplexing
With manual duplexing, it is possible to print on both sides of any size or weight of paper that is supported by the printer (although this is not recommended for transparencies). When this feature is used, the printer prints one side of the paper for each page of the job. The paper stack must be reinserted into the input tray (tray 1) to print the second side. The printer pauses while this adjustment is being made. The Allow Manual Duplexing check box on the Configure tab is selected by default for all models of the printer.
Mopier Enabled
A mopier is an HP-designed printer that produces multiple, collated copies from a single print job. Multiple-original printing (mopying) increases printer performance and reduces network traffic by sending the job to the printer once, then storing it. The remainder of the copies are printed at the fastest speed of the printer. All documents can be created, controlled, managed, and finished from the desktop, which eliminates the extra step of using a photocopier.
All HP LaserJet 2300 printer models except the HP LaserJet 2300 and the HP LaserJet 2300L support the Transmit Once mopying feature. The Mopier Enabled option is selected by default, if the printer has at least 48 MB of total memory.
Optional Paper Destinations
The drop-down menu contains only the following option:
  • (None)
Optional Paper Sources
The drop-down menu for this option lists optional paper sources for the printer. The list of available paper sources varies, depending on the printer, its input accessories, and the printer configuration settings on the Configure tab. For the HP LaserJet 2300 printer, two optional paper sources are available.
The settings in the Optional Paper Sources drop-down menu are as followings:
  • (None) (the default setting for the HP LaserJet 2300, 2300L, 2300n, 2300d, and 2300dn printer models)

  • HP 250-Sheet Input Tray

  • HP 500-sheet Input Tray (the default setting for the HP LaserJet 2300dtn printer model)

Other Options
This group box contains a single More button. Clicking this button opens the More Configuration Options dialog box, where the following can additionally be configured:
  • job storage features
  • font dual inline memory modules (DIMMs)
  • printer memory
  • scaling from large paper
  • application collation
