HP LaserJet 1300 Series Printer - Software Uninstall and Reinstall for Microsoft Windows XP on a USB Port

This document details how to uninstall the HP LaserJet 1300 series product from a computer running Microsoft Windows XP on a USB port. Uninstall the driver using one of the two options below.

Option 1: Control Panel method (preferred)

Perform the following to uninstall the driver software using the control panel method.
  1. Detach the USB cable from the HP LaserJet 1300 series product to the computer.
  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the software install.
    1. Simultaneously press and release the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard to open the Windows security window.

    2. Click Task Manager and then click the Applications tab.

    3. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    4. Repeat this procedure until all items are closed.
  3. Open the control panel and remove the printer from the system using the Add/Remove program wizard and remove the printer driver from the system.
    1. Select Start , Control Panel , then Change or Remove Programs from the Windows desktop.

    2. Click hp laserjet 1150, 1300 one time.

    3. Click the Change/Remove button.

    4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the printer driver from the system.
    5. Restart the computer when prompted.
  4. When Windows restarts, if the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  5. Delete the LJ1150/1300 folder.
    1. Select Start , then Search from the Windows desktop and select All Files and Folders under "What do you want to search for?"

    2. In the All or Part of the file name: text box, under "Search by any or all of the criteria below," type "hp LaserJet 1150_1300" (with quotation marks), and then click Find Now .

    3. Select Local Hard Drive (C:) from the Look in drop-down box, and then click Search .

    4. The hp LaserJet 1150_1300 folder should be located in the C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard folder. Click hp LaserJet 1150_1300 one time to highlight, click File and then Delete from the menu bar to remove the folder.

    5. Click Yes at the Confirm Folder Delete screen.

    6. Click Back to return to "Search by any or all of the criteria below."

  6. Delete all files in the temp folder on the computer.
    1. In the All or Part of the file name: text box, under "Search by any or all of the criteria below," type C:\Windows\temp (with quotation marks), and then click Find Now .

    2. When the files appear, click Edit and then Select All (this will highlight all the files).

    3. Click File and then Delete from the menu bar to remove all the files.

    4. Click Yes on the Confirm Multiple File Delete screen.

    5. Select Yes to All if the Confirm File Delete screen appears with a message.

    6. Close the Search Results screen.

  7. Remove USB printing support from Device Manager.
    1. Click Start , right-click My Computer , and left-click Properties from the drop-down menu.

    2. Click the Hardware tab and then select Device Manager button from the Windows desktop.

    3. Click the Plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers . If USB Printing Support is listed, right-click and select Uninstall from the drop-down list.

    4. Click OK on the Confirm Device Removal screen.

    5. If USB Printing Support is not listed, close the Device Manager and System Properties.
  8. Remove any listings for LJ 1150 / 1300 in the Printers window
    1. Click Start , then select Settings , then Printers .

    2. When the Printers window opens, right-click anywhere inside the window.

    3. Click Server Properties .

    4. Select the Driver tab and delete any listing for the printer.

  9. Empty the Recycle bin on the computer.
    1. Double-click the Recycle Bin icon on the Windows desktop. If the Recycle Bin icon is not on the desktop, select Start and then Recycle Bin .

    2. Click Empty Recycle Bin on the Recycle Bin screen under Recycle Bin Tasks.

    3. Click Yes on the Confirm Multiple File Delete screen.

    4. Select Yes to All if the Confirm File Delete screen appears with a message.

    5. Close the Recycle Bin.
  10. Run the scrubber utility.

    1. Remove the cable from the printer.

    2. Place the CD that was shipped with the printer in the Computer CD-ROM drive. If the CD autoruns, click Exit .

    3. Select Start , Run from the Windows desktop, and then type X:\Hewlett-Packard\scrubber\scrubber.exe (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive) in the text box, and then click OK . The hourglass will flash on the computer screen for a moment, and then return to the standard pointer when the scrubber process is complete.

    4. Restart Windows.
      NOTE: The uninstaller/scrubber will remove all of the USB, parallel, and network copies of the HP LaserJet 1150 and 1300 series printer driver files, including any failed installations.
  11. Go to the Reinstalling the software section for Windows XP operating systems.

Option 2: Program Group method

Perform the following to uninstall the driver software using the Program Group method.
NOTE: The original software CD-ROM is required when uninstalling the software using the Program Group method.
  1. Detach the USB cable from the HP LaserJet 1300 series product to the computer.
  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the software install.
    1. Simultaneously press and release the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard to open the Windows security window.

    2. Click Task Manager and then click the Applications tab.

    3. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    4. Repeat this procedure until all items are closed.
  3. Perform the following to remove the HP LaserJet 1300 series printer.
    1. Click Start , then Programs , and HP LaserJet 1150, 1300 from the Windows desktop.

    2. Click Add or Remove .

    3. Insert the HP LaserJet 1300 CD-ROM into the computer when prompted at the hp laserjet 1150/1300 window and then click OK .

    4. Restart the computer when prompted at the end of the uninstall process.
  4. When Windows restarts, if the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  5. Delete the LJ1150/1300 folder.
    1. Select Start , then Search from the Windows desktop and select All Files and Folders under "What do you want to search for?"

    2. In the All or Part of the file name: text box, under "Search by any or all of the criteria below," type "hp LaserJet 1150_1300" (with quotation marks), and then click Find Now .

    3. Select Local Hard Drive (C:) from the Look in drop-down box, and then click Search .

    4. The hp LaserJet 1150_1300 folder should be located in the C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard folder. Click hp LaserJet 1150_1300 one time to highlight, click File and then Delete from the menu bar to remove the folder.

    5. Click Yes at the Confirm Folder Delete screen.

    6. Click Back to return to "Search by any or all of the criteria below."

  6. Delete all files in the temp folder on the computer.
    1. In the All or Part of the file name: text box, under "Search by any or all of the criteria below," type C:\Windows\temp (with quotation marks), and then click Find Now .

    2. When the files appear, click Edit and then Select All (this will highlight all the files).

    3. Click File and then Delete from the menu bar to remove all the files.

    6. Close the Search Results screen.

  7. Remove USB printing support from Device Manager.
    1. Click Start , right-click My Computer , and left-click Properties from the drop-down menu.

    2. Click the Hardware tab and then select Device Manager button from the Windows desktop.

    3. Click the Plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers . If USB Printing Support is listed, right-click and select Uninstall from the drop-down list.

    4. Click OK on the Confirm Device Removal screen.

    5. If USB Printing Support is not listed, close the Device Manager and System Properties .

  8. Empty the Recycle bin on the computer.
    1. Double-click the Recycle Bin icon on the Windows desktop. If the Recycle Bin icon is not on the desktop, select Start and then Recycle Bin .

    2. Click Empty Recycle Bin on the Recycle Bin screen under Recycle Bin Tasks.

    3. Click Yes on the Confirm Multiple File Delete screen.

    4. Select Yes to All if the Confirm File Delete screen appears with a message.

    5. Close the Recycle Bin .

  9. Run the scrubber utility.

    1. Remove the cable from the printer.

    2. Place the CD that was shipped with the printer in the Computer CD-ROM drive. If the CD autoruns, click Exit .

    3. Select Start , Run from the Windows desktop, and then type X:\Hewlett-Packard\scrubber\scrubber.exe (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive) in the text box, and then click OK .     4. Restart Windows.

  10. Go to the Reinstalling the software section for Windows XP operating systems.

Reinstalling the software

Minimum system requirements

PC-compatible computer with the following

  • Windows XP operating system
  • Pentium 300 MHz processor or faster
  • Minimum 64 MB of RAM
  • 140 MB or more free hard disk space available on the same partition as the operating system
  • Minimum USB 1.1 port (limited functionality) or a backwards compatible USB 2.0 full-speed compliant port
  • A 2x or above CD-ROM drive (required for installation)
  • TCP/IP protocol installed

USB cable specifications

The HP LaserJet 1300 series printer requires a USB, version 2.0 full speed cable.

Software-first installation (preferred)

CAUTION: Do not connect the printer cable to the computer until prompted to do so. Attaching the printer to the computer before starting the software installation, may cause errors during the printer setup process. If the hardware is installed first on a Windows XP system using a USB connection, it is recommended that the default settings that appear in the New Hardware wizard are accepted for correct installation.
NOTE: Note the model number of the printer on the front of the printer before starting the installation.
  1. Verify that the USB cable is not connected to the computer.
  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the software install.
    1. Simultaneously press and release the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard to open the Windows security window.

    2. Click Task Manager and then click the Applications tab.

    3. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    4. Repeat this procedure until all items are closed.
  3. Place the software CD-ROM that came with the printer into the computer CD-ROM drive. If the New Hardware Found message appears on the screen, click Cancel . Follow the onscreen installation instructions. If the Welcome screen does not automatically open, select Start , then Run from the Windows desktop and type Z:\hpsetup (where Z is the CD drive letter), and then click OK .

  4. Read the information on the Welcome screen, and then click Install Printer . The Welcome screen provides five options:

    • Install printer: Starts the installation process and opens the setup wizard.
    • Customization utility: Starts the optimization utility.
    • Register product: Registers the HP LaserJet 1300 printer software.
    • View documentation: Permits the HP LaserJet 1300 documentation to be viewed.
    • Support: Provides an option to access HP online support and order supplies online.
  5. Read the licensing agreement, and then click Next .

  6. Select the Connected directly to this computer printer connection method and then click Next .

  7. Select the USB connector type and the appropriate port from the drop-down list, and then click Next .

  8. Select the appropriate printer model from the list, and then click Next .
    NOTE: Verify that the correct printer model is connected before continuing.
  9. Select Typical Installation , and then click Next .

  10. Accept the default printer name or type a new name, and then click Next .

  11. Select the appropriate shared printer option, click Next .

  12. In the text box, type the location and comment (optional), and then click Next .

  13. Click Next to install the software.

  14. Connect the printer to the computer.
  15. Onscreen checkboxes permit the user to print a driver test page, read release note, check for Web updates, and register the printer online. The Print a driver test page checkbox is selected by default. You can accept one or all of these settings, and then click Finish . The following options are available:
    • To print a test page, a dialog box asks if the test page printed correctly. Click Yes to close the dialog box and finish the installation, or click Troubleshoot to launch the Windows print-troubleshooting tool.

    • If you chose to read release notes, select the Read release notes checkbox.

    • To check for Web updates, select the Check for Web updates checkbox.

    • If you chose to register the printer online, your browser launches and displays the online registration screen at http://www.hp.com. Follow the onscreen directions to register the printer. Once the registration is completed or if you did not chose to register the product online, a dialog box that describes the benefits of registering the printer appears, click OK to finish.

  16. The computer must be restarted before the configuration changes made to the HP LaserJet 1300 series printer will take affect. Click Yes to restart now, or click No to restart later.
