HP Scanjet 8200 Series - Troubleshooting the HP Scanjet 8200 Series

Introduction

This document addresses the most common issues and questions that may arise when using your HP Scanjet 8200 Series. In order to facilitate this troubleshooting process, the document will be structured into hardware, communication and software sections.

Hardware

The hardware incidences that may occur when using your HP Scanjet 8200 Series could be related to the scanner or the computer. In order to determine if the issue is due to the scanner or the computer, please try the following steps:

Step 1 : Check your computer

  • Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements that are listed on the scanner box. Click this link to go to the Minimum System Requirements that are listed on the scanner box. c00014015

  • If you do not have enough hard-disk space, remove unnecessary files or install the software on a different disk drive.

Step 2 : Perform the Scanner Hardware test

The Diagnostic mode is essential to test the scanner and all its different parts. To enter Diagnostic mode, do the following:
  1. Disconnect Interface cable (USB or SCSI) and simultaneously press and hold EDIT TEXT (OCR) and E-MAIL buttons for approximately two seconds. The LCD will display Diagnostic mode (see Figure 1 above).

  2. To exit Diagnostic mode, disconnect power adapter from scanner.

1 - Scan To button
It tests the carriage functionality, the ADF functionality in Simplex or Duplex mode, the ADF Simplex/Duplex switch and the scanner ADF accessory cable. To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press SCAN TO button. The carriage will move at the speed of preview scan up and down the scan window until another button is pressed or one minute transpires (see Figure 2 above).
    NOTE: If an ADF is detected and paper is in the input tray, the paper will feed in either Simplex or Duplex mode (switch dependent) until the input tray is empty at the appropriate speed for that particular ADF (assuming a 200 x 200 one bit black and white scan).
  2. Please check the HP Scanjet ADF inside:

If Error 05 or Error 07 appears on LCD or there is an ADF PAPER JAM error message, the scanner might require service.

1 - TMA lamp
It tests the functionality of the TMA lamp, the scanner TMA accessory cable and the scanner´s capability to recognize presence of TMA. To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press SCAN PICTURE button once (see Figure 3 above). The TMA lamp should turn on (see Figure 4 above). If pressed a second time, the TMA lamp turns off (if TMA is detected).

NOTE: The scanner carriage lamp should be off when the TMA lamp is on and should be on when the TMA lamp is off. The only time the TMA could not be detected is if the accessory cable is not plugged into scanner.

If LCD displays Error 06 or Error 09 , the TMA might require service.

1 - Edit Text (OCR) button
It tests the functionality of the scanner carriage mechanism and lamp. To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press EDIT TEXT (OCR) button once. The scanner will continue scanning until the before mentioned button is pressed again or until the power is cycled (see Figure 5 above).

NOTE: The scanner lamp can be toggled on/off prior to beginning this test by using the scanner TMA lamp test (see previous Section).

If Error 05 or Error 07 is displayed on LCD, the scanner might require service.

1 - File Document button
It tests the functionality of the ADF mechanism (Simplex or Duplex mode), the ADF mechanism paper sensor, the ADF Simplex/Duplex mode switch and the scanner accessory cable. To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press FILE DOCUMENT button. The scanner will start a continuous ADF scan in either Simplex or Duplex mode, depending on the state of the ADF Simplex/Duplex switch (if ADF input tray becomes empty, the ADF mechanism will continue to operate as if it had paper) (see Figure 6 above).

  2. When paper is added to the ADF input tray, the ADF will delay for two seconds and begin feeding paper again. Test will continue until FILE DOCUMENT button is pressed again or until power is cycled.

  3. Please check the HP Scanjet ADF inside:

If Error 07 appears on LCD or there are ADF PAPER JAM or CLOSE ADF HATCH error messages, the ADF might require service.

It tests the full functionality of the ADF mechanism sensors:
  • Simplex/Duplex mode switch sensor

  • ADF Hatch sensor

  • Paper Path sensor

  • Paper Loaded sensor

To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press E-MAIL button. The LCD will display centered the state of the ADF sensors in a binary format (0 or 1) (see Figures 7 and 8 above).

  2. Please check the HP Scanjet ADF inside:

If Error 07, 08, or 10 appear on LCD, the ADF might require service.

The scanner accessory presence test:
  • Determines if the scanner can recognize the presence of an accessory.

  • Shows which accessory is attached.

  • Tests the scanner accessory cable.

To perform the test, do the following:
  1. Press COPY button (see Figure 9 above). The scanner will detect which accessory is connected and displays result on the LCD as one of the following:

    • TMA

    • 15 PPM ADF/TMA

    • 25 PPM ADF/TMA

  2. Please check the HP Scanjet ADF inside:

If Error 09 or ADF PAPER JAM or CLOSE ADF HATCH error messages appear on LCD, the accessory might require service.

Communication

The communication incidences between the HP Scanjet 8200 Series and your computer can be easily solved by following these useful steps:

Step 1: Check the cables

  • Check that the power cable is securely connected between the scanner and a working electrical outlet or surge protector.

  • If the power cable is connected to a surge protector, make sure the surge protector is plugged into an outlet and turned on. Otherwise, try connecting the scanner power cable directly to the outlet.

  • Please use the USB/SCSI cable supplied with the scanner. Another USB/SCSI cable might not be compatible with the scanner.
    NOTE: The SCSI Card Module and the SCSI Card Kit are optional accessories for the HP 8200 and 8250 Scanjet Scanners but they are included with the HP 8290 Scanjet Scanner.
  • Check that the USB/SCSI cable is securely connected between the scanner and the computer. Verify that the SCSI cable pins are not bent or broken.

  • Disconnect the power cable from the scanner and turn off the computer. After 30 seconds, reconnect the power cable to the scanner and then turn on the computer, in that order.

Step 2: Scanner initialization failed

  • If an error message similar to Scanner initialization failed or Scanner not found is received when trying to use the scanner, please follow these instructions:

    1. Close the error message dialog box and the application that was open when the error message was received.

    2. Disconnect the USB/SCSI cable from the scanner and then reconnect it (Try to do a scan to see if the scanner is working now. If not, please proceed with the next step).

    3. Shut down the computer and turn it off.

    4. Unplug the scanner from the power source.

    5. Disconnect the USB/SCSI cable from the scanner and the computer.

    6. Reconnect the power cable to an electrical outlet or surge protector.

    7. Check the USB cable for any visible, external damage. Verify that the SCSI cable pins are not bent or broken.

    8. Firmly reconnect the USB/SCSI cable directly to the scanner. Remove any USB hub if present.

    9. Firmly reconnect the USB/SCSI cable to the computer using another USB/SCSI port, if possible. The USB/SCSI cable must be inserted completely into the computer´s USB/SCSI port.
      NOTE: It is important that the scanner and computer be turned off for at least sixty seconds before being restarted.
    10. Restart the computer.

Software

The software incidences that may happen when launching the HP scanning application could be solved by trying the following options:

On a Microsoft Windows computer, if messages such as Destination Directory is Invalid or Program Folder is Invalid are received during installation, do one of the following:

  • Type a valid destination folder name. The destination folder cannot contain the following characters: / , \ , : , ? , * , < , > , " , or | .

  • Find a valid folder using the Browse button.

Repair the Photo and Imaging or the HP PrecisionScan Pro 3.x (only for Windows NT 4.0) software

  • If the scanner still fails to initialize, a software conflict might exist on your computer and the Photo and Imaging or the PrecisionScan Pro 3.x software will need to be repaired. To do this, run the Repair utility (Windows computers only ) :

    1. Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel . In Windows XP, click Start , and then click Control Panel .

    2. Click Add/Remove Programs , and then select the HP Photo and Imaging or the PrecisionScan Pro 3.x software (PrecisionScan Pro 3.x software only for Windows NT 4.0).

    3. Click Change (or Add/Remove , depending on your version of Windows).

    4. Follow the instructions on the computer screen, and then click Repair .

  • If this does not work, install the scanner on another computer. This will help to determine if the problem is related to the first computer or to the scanner.

Uninstalling the software

The uninstall option of the setup program allows the user to remove the scanning software from the computer by performing these steps:
  • For Windows computers

    1. Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel . In Windows XP, click Start , and then click Control Panel .

    2. Click Add/Remove Programs , and then select the HP Photo and Imaging or the HP PrecisionScan Pro 3.x software (HP PrecisionScan Pro 3.x software only for Windows NT 4.0).

    3. Click Change or Add/Remove , depending on your Windows version .

    4. Continue with the instructions on the screen, and then click Remove .

  • For Macintosh computers

    1. Unplug the scanner and restart the computer. (If the scanner is not unplugged and the computer is not restarted before installing the software, some files will not be removed from your computer during uninstallation.)

    2. Insert the HP scanning software CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive. (If the HP scanning software window does not appear, double-click the icon for the CD-ROM.)

    3. Double-click the Installer , and then follow the instructions on the screen.

    4. When the main installation dialog box appears, select Uninstall from the pull-down menu.

    5. Click Uninstall , and then follow the instructions on the screen.
