HP LaserJet 1160 and 1320 Series Printers - Mac OS: Requirements and Installation

System requirements

The HP LaserJet 1160/1320 printing-system software has the following minimum system requirements:
  • Mac 9.2 or OS X (v 10.1, v 10.2, or v 10.3 and later)

  • Macintosh computer (Power PC processor), such as an iMac, a Power Macintosh G3, G4, or G5, an eMac, an iMac, an IBook, or a PowerBook

  • RAM: For Mac OS 9.2, the minimum system memory is 96 MB; for Mac OS X (v 10.1, v 10.2, or v 10.3 and later), the minimum system memory is 128 MB. These are minimum system requirements for memory. An additional 32 MB of free memory is optimum for installation.

  • 150 MB or more of free hard-disk space

  • A USB port or an Ethernet connection that uses an HP Jetdirect print server

  • A CD-ROM drive (required for installation)

Installation overview

The printing-system software for the HP LaserJet 1160/1320 series printer is shipped on one CD. On Mac OS systems, the HP Installer program installs the HP LaserJet 1160/1320 printing-system software from the CD onto the hard disk.

On Mac OS systems, your HP LaserJet 1160/1320 series printer uses the HP Installer. This Installer provides an Easy Install option, which installs only the HP LaserJet 1160/1320 printing-system software on the current system startup drive that contains the active System folder.

LaserJet 1160 direct-connection installation instructions for Mac OS 9.2

Please ensure that the LaserJet 1160 is not connected to the Macintosh at this time.
  1. Insert the HP LaserJet 1160 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Open the hp LaserJet 1160 folder for your printer.

    2. Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer Classic .

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Please ensure that the hp LaserJet 1160 is turned on and connected to your Macintosh.

  4. Install the hp LaserJet 1160 onto your Macintosh computer

    1. Click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the desktop and select the Chooser .

    2. Click on the hp LaserJet v1.3 icon in the left window of the Chooser.

    3. If the message appears "Do you wish to Scan for TCP/IP networks? " click the OK button. Select the hp LaserJet 1160 from the list.

    4. Close the Chooser .

LaserJet 1320 direct-connection installation instructions for Mac OS 9.2

  1. Insert the hp LaserJet 1320 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Open the hp LaserJet 1320 folder for your printer.

    2. Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer 4.2 EN. .

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Install the printer using Apple Desktop Printer Utility .

    1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

    2. Open the Applications folder.

    3. Open the Utilities folder.

    4. Double-click the Desktop Printer Utility icon to run the application.

  4. Double-click Printer (USB) .

  5. Next to USB Printer Selection, click Change .

  6. Select the printer, and then click OK .

  7. Next to Postscript Printer Description (PPD) File, click Change .

  8. Select the hp LaserJet 1320 Series PPD and then click the Save button.

  9. Click the Create button. Follow the prompts to save your printer.

LaserJet 1160/1320 direct-connection installation instructions for Mac OS X (v 10.1, v 10.2, or v 10.3)

Ensure that the LaserJet 1160/1320 is not connected to the Macintosh at this time.
  1. Insert the software CD-ROM that was included with the printer into your computer.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Select folder for the printer that you will be installing, either the hp LaserJet 1160 or the hp LaserJet 1320 .

    2. For the LaserJet 1160, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer OS X file. For the LaserJet 1320, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer 4.2 EN file.

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button.

    6. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Please ensure that the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 is turned on and connected to your Macintosh.

  4. Install the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 onto your Macintosh. Open the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility (for OS X 10.3.x).

    1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

    2. Open the Applications folder.

    3. Open the Utilities folder.

    4. Double click on the icon for the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility icon.

  5. Verify that the printer and the computer are communicating. If the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 series printer appears in the list of printers, the installation is complete. If the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 series printer does not appear in the list of printers, please continue with the next step.

  6. Click the Add button.

  7. Select the USB from the pull down menu.

  8. Select the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 from the list. The hp LaserJet 1160 will automatically be configured with the driver. For the hp LaserJet 1320, select the PPD by clicking on the Printer Model box and selecting the hp LaserJet 1320 series printer .

  9. Click the Add button.

  10. Close the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility program.

LaserJet 1160/1320 direct-connection installation instructions for Mac OS X (v10.4)

Ensure that the LaserJet 1160/1320 is not connected to the Macintosh at this time.
  1. Insert the software CD-ROM that was included with the printer into your computer.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Select folder for the printer that you will be installing, either the hp LaserJet 1160 or the hp LaserJet 1320.

    2. For the LaserJet 1160, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer OS X file. For the LaserJet 1320, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer 4.2 EN file.

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Please ensure that the hp LaserJet 1160/1320 is turned on and connected to your Macintosh.

  4. Click on the apple icon in the upper left corner of the desktop.

  5. Select System Preferences .

  6. Click on Print and Fax.

  7. If the LaserJet 1160/1320 does not already appear in the left window, click on the "+" button beneath this window. The Printer Setup Utility will open.

  8. Locate the LaserJet 1160/1320 under the Printer Name column. The driver or PPD will automatically be selected and you can simply click on the Add button.

LaserJet 1160 network installation instructions for Mac OS 9

Please endure that the LaserJet 1160 is not powered on during the software installation.
  1. Insert the hp LaserJet 1160 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Open the hp LaserJet 1160 folder for your printer.

    2. Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer Classic .

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Install the LaserJet 1160 onto your Macintosh computer.

    1. Click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the desktop and select the Chooser.

    2. Click on the hp LaserJet v1.3 icon in the left window of the Chooser.

    3. If the message appears "Do you wish to Scan for TCP/IP networks?" , click the OK button. Select the hp LaserJet 1160 from the list.

    4. Close the Chooser .

LaserJet 1320 network installation instructions for Mac OS 9

The HP LaserJet 1320n,1320nw and 1320tn printers have an internal HP Jetdirect print server for network connection. For a 10/100 Base-T network, connect a twisted-pair network cable between the printer and an active network port.
  1. Insert the hp LaserJet 1320 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

  3. Open the hp LaserJet 1320 folder.

  4. For the LaserJet 1320, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer 4.2 EN file.

  5. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

  6. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

  7. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  8. Print a Jetdirect Configuration Page to obtain the IP Address of the hp LaserJet 1320. To print this page:

    1. Press the small black button above the RJ-45 Ethernet connection on the back of the hp LaserJet 1320.

    2. The page that is printed will have the IP address under the TCP/IP header.

  9. Install the hp LaserJet 1320 onto your Macintosh.

  10. Open the Desktop Printer Utility .

    1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

    2. Double-click the Applications folder to open it.

    3. Double-click the Utilities folder to open it.

    4. Double-click the Desktop Printer Utility icon to run the application.

  11. A 'New Desktop Printer' window will appear. Ensure that LaserWriter 8 is selected in the pull down menu at the top of the window and then highlight 'Printer (LPR) '. Click the OK button.

  12. Click the Change button beside the LPR Printer Selection window.

  13. Enter the IP Address and click on the Verify button. Once the IP Address is verified, click the OK button. If the IP address cannot be verified, please contact your IP administrator to ensure that the IP Addresses are compatible with each other.

  14. Enter 'BINPS ' into the Queue field and click the OK button.

  15. Click the Change button beside the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file box.

  16. Highlight the hp LaserJet 1320 Series option and click the Select button.

  17. Click the Create button. When prompted, you may change the name of the printer to one you prefer.

  18. Click the OK button to complete the installation.

LaserJet 1160 network installation instructions for Mac OS X (v 10.1, v 10.2, or v 10.3)

Please endure that the LaserJet 1160 is not powered on during the software installation.
  1. Insert the hp LaserJet 1160 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Open the hp LaserJet 1160 folder for your printer.

    2. Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer Classic .

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Install the hp LaserJet 1160 onto your Macintosh by opening the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility (for OS X 10.3.x).

    1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

    2. Open the Applications folder.

    3. Open the Utilities folder.

    4. Double-click on the icon for the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility icon.

You have three options for network protocol. Please select your option and follow the instructions given below.
  • AppleTalk

    1. Click on the Add button and select AppleTalk as your protocol.

    2. Highlight the hp LaserJet 1160 in the list and click the Add button.

    3. Close the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility.

  • TCP/IP

    1. Click on the Add button and select hp IP Printing as your protocol.

    2. Once the hp LaserJet 1160 is shown in the window, highlight the printer and click the Add button.

    3. Close the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility .

  • Rendezvous/Bonjour Please note that HP does not fully support Rendezvous / Bonjour as a network protocol. At this time, support offered for Rendezvous is on a "best effort" basis. "Best effort" support will attempt the following:
    • Installation of the software/hardware.

    • Test installation to verify software/hardware works.

    • Limited troubleshooting.

      1. Click on the Add button and select Rendezvous as your protocol.

      2. Highlight the hp LaserJet 1160 in the list and click the Add button. Please note that you may be able to change the driver. However, if any option besides the hp Color LaserJet 1.3 driver is selected, the printer will fail to print properly.

      3. Close the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility .

LaserJet 1320 network installation instructions for Mac OS X (v 10.1, v 10.2, or v 10.3)

The HP LaserJet 1320n, 1320nw and 1320tn printers have an internal HP Jetdirect print server for network connection. For a 10/100 Base-T network, connect a twisted-pair network cable between the printer and an active network port.

The HP LaserJet 1320 does not support installation on an AppleTalk network protocol.
  1. Insert the hp LaserJet 1320 series printing-system software CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Run the installation software located on the CD.

    1. Open the hp LaserJet 1320 folder.

    2. For the LaserJet 1320, double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer 4.2 EN file.

    3. Click the OK button. If prompted, enter the Macintosh Administration password. If you do not have a password installed, leave the field blank and click the OK button. If an error message appears, please contact your network administrator.

    4. Click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Licensing Agreement.

    5. At the top left hand side of the window that appears, Easy Install will be selected. Click the OK button. Once the software has been successfully installed click the Quit button.

  3. Print a Jetdirect Configuration Page to obtain the IP Address of the hp LaserJet 1320. To print this page:

    1. Press the small black button above the RJ-45 Ethernet connection on the back of the hp LaserJet 1320.

    2. The page that is printed will have the IP address under the TCP/IP header.

  4. Install the hp LaserJet 1320 with your preferred network protocol.

    IP Printing

    1. Open the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility (for OS X 10.3.x).

      1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

      2. Open the Applications folder.

      3. Open the Utilities folder.

      4. Double-click on the icon for the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility icon.

    2. Click on the Add button and select IP Printing as your protocol.

    3. Enter the IP Address from the EIO Jetdirect page into the Printer Address box.

    4. Click on Generic and select the HP option. Locate the hp LaserJet 1320 Series option and select it. If there are two options, choose the second option. Click the Add button.

    5. Close the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility .

Rendezvous - Please note that HP does not fully support Rendezvous as a network protocol. At this time, support offered for Rendezvous is on a "best effort" basis. "Best effort" support will attempt the following:
  • Installation of the software/hardware.

  • Test installation to verify software/hardware works.

    1. Open the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility (for OS X 10.3.x).

    3. Highlight the hp LaserJet 1320 in the list and click the Add button. The PPD will automatically be selected and any options for the printer will be installed.

    4. Close the Printer Setup Utility .

LaserJet 1160/1320 network connection installation instructions for Mac OS X (v 10.4)

The HP LaserJet 1160 and 1320 printer software is pre-installed in the Macintosh OS X version 10.4 operating system; therefore, no user interaction is required.
  1. Please ensure the printer is powered on .

  2. Click on the apple icon in the upper left corner of the desktop.

  3. Select System Preferences .

  4. Click on Print and Fax .

  5. If the LaserJet 1160/1320 does not already appear in the left window, click on the "+" button beneath this window. The Printer Setup Utility will open.

  6. Locate the LaserJet 1160/1320 under the Printer Name column. The driver or PPD will automatically be selected and you can simply click on the Add button.

Network information for Rendezvous / Bonjour installation

If the IP Address of the hp LaserJet 1320n/nw/tn is 192.0.0.192 , the Rendezvous connection may be intermittent. Included below are instructions to change the Legacy IP Address of 192.0.0.192 to an Auto IP Address of 169.254.xxx.xxx. These instructions should be followed if the hp LaserJet 1320 is using a Rendezvous connection with a 192.0.0.192 IP Address. Please refer to the Jetdirect configuration page to check the IP address.

Bonjour replaced Rendezvous as the protocol name in Macintosh OS X v10.4.
  1. Print a Jetdirect Configuration Page to obtain the IP Address of the hp LaserJet 1320. To print this page:

    1. Press the small black button above the RJ-45 Ethernet connection on the back of the hp LaserJet 1320.

    2. The page that is printed will have the IP address under the TCP/IP header.

  2. Open the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility (for OS X v10.3 and v10.4).

    1. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).

    2. Open the Applications folder.

    3. Open the Utilities folder.

    4. Double-click on the icon for the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility icon.

  3. With the LaserJet 1320 highlighted in the Printer List, click on the Utility button.

  4. Select the Networking tab.

  5. Select the TCP/IP tab.

  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the Default IP .

  7. Change the Default IP to Auto IP (169.254.x.x) and click the Apply button in the lower right side of the page.

  8. Wait two minutes and press the small black button above the Ethernet connection on the back of the printer. A HP Jetdirect Configuration page will print. On the right side of the page, you will find the IP Address and it should read 169.254.X.X. If not, wait an additional two minutes and print the Jetdirect page again. Once the IP Address is 169.254.X.X, continue with the next step.

  9. Delete the hp LaserJet 1320 from the Printer List.

  10. Re-install the hp LaserJet 1320 with the Rendezvous protocol.
