ProLiant DL380 G3 - Integrated Lights Out

Integrated Lights-Out on System Board

The ProLiant DL380 G3 server includes the iLO processor, which combines the functionality of the Advanced System Management (ASM) ASIC and the RILOE board. The Integrated Lights-Out provides standard and advanced levels of lights-out functionality and allows the DL380 G3 server to be easier to deploy and manage. iLO enables a system administrator to manage all of their servers remotely from a web browser and to monitor components within those servers.

Integrated Lights-Out resides on each ProLiant DL380 G3 server system board and incorporates new functionality in its firmware to support the specific modular infrastructure of the ProLiant DL380 G3 system. A dedicated 10/100 Ethernet NIC connects iLO to the rest of the network.

The iLO management system features the following components:

  • 66 MHz RISC processor

  • 2 MB flash memory

  • 8 MB SDRAM memory

  • Instruction cache and data cache

  • 512 bytes EEPROM

  • A dedicated 10/100 Ethernet NIC

The iLO processor is powered through the auxiliary power plane of the server, so the processor is always powered on regardless of the state of the server. This provides the following advanages:

  1. If the server is powered off, the iLO processor is still accessible.

  2. If the server fails because of an operating system error, monitoring of the server can continue.

    NOTE: As long as the server is plugged into an A/C power source, auxiliary power is provided to the iLO ASIC for remote access, even when the server is turned off.

iLO Standard

The ProLiant DL380 G3 ships with iLO Standard. iLO Standard provides basic system board management functions, diagnostics, and essential Lights-Out functionality. The following features are supported with iLO Standard.

Virtual Text Remote Console

Embedded remote console capabilities are provided for text mode screens. The operating system–independent console supports text modes that display remote host server activities, such as startup and shutdown operations.

Virtual Power Button

Using a supported browser interface, iLO can be used to power up, power down, or restart a remote server. A 'press and hold' option is available in the event that a momentary press is insufficient to power off a server with a failed operating system.

UID LED Control

A Unit ID (UID) LED is located in the front and rear of the server. iLO can:

  • Display the status of the UID LED.

  • Enable and disable the UID LED.

  • Blink the UID LED to indicate that iLO is engaged in an activity that should not be interrupted, such as flashing the iLO firmware or an active Remote Console session.

Standard Security

Security in delivering remote management solutions is crucial. HP offers a robust security implementation for iLO, including industry-standard 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) data stream encryption, to ensure proper user authentication. Security features in iLO include:

  • Unique X.509 certificates

  • Configurable TCP/IP ports (HTTP, HTTPS, Remote Console, Virtual Media)

  • Physical security jumper that allows recovery if all passwords are lost

  • Digitally signed firmware images

  • Define up to 12 user accounts with customizable access rights.

  • View user actions in event logs and receive unauthorized access alerts.


iLO Advanced Pack

Additional features, such as the virtual floppy drive and the virtual graphical remote console, can be enabled by licensing the optional iLO Advanced Pack.

NOTE: A license key is required for technical support and future firmware upgrades.

Virtual Floppy Drive

With virtual floppy drive a remote host server can ebe directed to boot and use standard media from anywhere on the network, eliminating the need to visit a remote server to insert and use a diskette. The virtual floppy drive allows to:

  • Apply ROMPaq upgrades to remote servers.

  • Deploy an operating system on remote servers from network drives or by using the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit.

  • Perform disaster recovery of failed operating systems.

    NOTE: For operating systems that support USB diskette drive devices, the iLO virtual floppy is available to boot the server and to use as a media device while the operating system is running or loading.

Virtual Graphical Remote Console

The virtual graphical remote console provides embedded graphical remote console capabilities that can turn a supported browser into a virtual desktop. The remote console is accessible from anywhere on the network through a standard Internet Explorer 5.0 or later browser. The console includes all text-mode and graphics-mode screens with full keyboard and mouse controls. The remote console offers several features:
  • The remote console is available during all server states, including setup, boot, online, or halted.

  • The remote console is hardware-based, so the ProLiant DL380 G3 requires no special software. The feature is operating system independent and works with Microsoft .NET Server, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, Novell, and Linux.

  • Accessing the remote console from the management computer has no impact on the ProLiant DL380 G3 processor resources.
