The following error message appears when using HP Smart Card Security for ProtectTools:

The password in F10 setup does not match the password in the BIOS

This error occurs after setting the password in Computer Setup (F10) using the num-lock keypad. You are not locked out of the computer, but are blocked from setting the Power-on authentication.


The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.


To resolve this issue, enter F10 Computer Setup and establish a different password that does not use input characters from the num-lock keypad. Perform the following steps:

  1. Boot or restart the computer. If you are in Windows, click Start > Shut Down > Select Restart from the pull down menu > click OK.
  2. When the F10 setup message appears in the lower left corner of the screen, press the F10 key.
  3. Use the right arrow key to select the Security tab.
  4. Ensure Administrator Password is highlighted. Press Enter.
  5. Enter the new password.
  6. Confirm the the new password.
NOTE: Do not use the Num-Lock keypad to enter the password.
