HP Deskjet 3900 Series, 5400 Series, and 5900 Series Printers - A 'File on Pdl_Lang is needed...' Error Message Displays while Installing the English Software on a Non-English Version of Windows XP

This document applies to the following printers:
  • HP Deskjet 3910, 3915, 3918, 3920, 3930, 3930v, 3938, 3940, and 3940v

  • HP Deskjet 5438, 5420v, 5432, 5440, 5440v, 5440xi, 5442, and 5443

  • HP Deskjet 5940, 5940xi, and 5943

Issue

While installing the English version of HP software on a non-English version of Windows XP, one of the following error messages might display on the screen:

  • 'The file unires.dll on Pdl_Lang is needed...'

  • 'The file unidrv.dll on Pdl_Lang is needed...'

  • 'The file unidrv.hlp on Pdl_Lang is needed...'

Solution

  1. Close the error message window.

  2. Remove the installation CD from the CD Drive.

  3. Click Start.

  4. Click Control Panel.

  5. The Pick a category screen displays. Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.

  6. The Pick a task..or pick a Control Panel icon screen displays. Click Regional and Language Options.

  7. Click the Advanced tab.

  8. In the Language for non-Unicode programs box, make note of the original settings and then select English (United States).

  9. Click Apply and then click OK.

  10. Restart the computer now (if prompted to do so).

  11. Insert the installation CD in the CD Drive. If it does not start automatically, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start.

    2. Click Run. The Run dialog box displays.

    3. In the Open: text box, type D:\, where D is the letter of the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.

  12. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

  13. After successful installation of the printer drivers, repeat Steps Three through Eight.

  14. In the Language for non-Unicode programs list, select the original language setting that was noted in Step Eight.

  15. Click Apply and then click OK.

  16. Restart the computer (if prompted to do so).
