Original Document Release.

While deploying VMware ESX Server 3.0 using the HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP) - Windows Edition 3.10, the target server may fail to connect to the FTP server during the initial stages of installation. The following message is displayed on the target server console, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the FTP server:

Failed to log into xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: Failed to connect to FTP server

When this occurs, the scripted installation will halt while waiting for user input. The installation failure will occur on all target servers on the affected network. The deployment server will not display a message to indicate that the connection to the FTP server failed, but the job will not complete.

SCOPE

Any ProLiant server deployed with VMware ESX Server 3.x using HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP) - Windows Edition 3.10 to 3.70.

For additional technical help on HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack, refer to the ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack Knowledge base located at the following URL:

RESOLUTION

  1. On the target server console, press the "OK" button to continue after the following message is displayed:
Failed to log into xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: Failed to connect to FTP server
This will allow the target server to connect to the FTP server and the VMware ESX Server 3.x scripted installation to continue without interruption.
  2. Remove the " --HOSTNAME" parameter from the "network" option in the kickstart file. When this parameter is removed Anaconda will query the DNS server for a hostname or default to localhost.localdomain; this delay will correct the network issue and allow the installation to continue without user intervention. If necessary, the hostname can be configured in the "POST" section of the kickstart file.
  3. Disable the LACP protocol on the ports directly connected to the server that is targeted for deployment. HP Rapid Deployment Pack 3.80 implemented a workaround that will allow the FTP server connection to occur without intervention.

A future release of HP Rapid Deployment Pack and a future release of VMware ESX Server 3.5.x will implement a fix that will correct the problem with the FTP connection without the use of a workaround.
This advisory will be updated when more information is available.
