The Processor Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) May Fail Prematurely On Certain ProLiant DL580 G2 Servers
NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.

Release Date: 2002-11-08

Last Updated: 2007-10-16

DESCRIPTION

Certain processor Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs) containing non-ceramic capacitors that were used on a limited number of ProLiant DL580 G2 servers may fail prematurely, causing the processor supported by that VRM to stop functioning. In some cases, a single VRM failure may cause all installed VRMs to be reported as failed, because the voltage plane is shared between VRMs.

The premature failure occurs most frequently when powering on the server, causing the server to fail to power on. If the VRM fails while the server is already powered on, the server will shut down.

The potential for failure is minimal and is limited to a range of ProLiant DL580 G2 servers that meet BOTH of the following criteria:

  • Week Code: Potentially affected servers have a week code PRIOR TO week 39. The week code is part of the 12 digit serial number and can be decoded as outlined in the Resolution section of this Advisory.

  • VRM Part Number and VRM Revision Number: Affected VRMs have a part number of 229400-001 and a Revision level of 01, 02, or 03.

IMPORTANT: VRMs with part number 229400-001 having a Revision level of 04 (or above), or VRMs with part number 229400-002 were manufactured with ceramic capacitors and are not affected by this issue.

SCOPE

Any ProLiant DL580 G2 server with a week code PRIOR TO week 39 as well as a Voltage Regulator Module with part number 229400-001 and a Revision level of 01, 02, or 03.

IMPORTANT: VRMs with a part number of 229400-002, or VRMs with part number 229400-001 having a Revision level of 04 (or higher) were manufactured with ceramic capacitors and are not affected by this issue.

RESOLUTION

Replace failed VRMs that meet the criteria outlined in the Description section of this Advisory, using the following procedure: Verifying Affected ProLiant DL580 G2 Servers:

  1. Examine the serial number of the server. The two-digit week code is represented by the third and fourth numbers of the 12-digit serial number. Use the example below to decode the serial number.
    S
    Y
    WW
    CCCC
    ZZZZ

S is a site code and denotes the site of manufacture. Site codes can be either numeric or alpha.
Y is the last digit of the year in which the product was produced.
W is the week in which the product was produced.
C is the configuration code that defines the specific computer as shipped out of the factory.
Z is the serial number which allows service to differentiate between units produced in the same week.
  2. If the week code is # 39 (or later), the server is not affected by this issue.
  3. If the week code is # 38 (or earlier), visually inspect the VRM.

  4. To examine the VRM, open the server and use the following steps to determine if the VRM is affected:

Verifying Affected Failed VRMs:

  1. Examine the part number on the VRM (see figure 1). If the part number is 229400-002 , the VRM is NOT affected by this issue.

  2. If the part number is 229400-001 , examine the Revision level on the VRM.

  3. If the part number is 229400-001 , and the Revision level is 04 (or higher), the VRM is NOT affected by this issue.

  4. If the part number of the failed VRM is 229400-001 and the Revision level is 01, 02, or 03, the VRM meets the criteria for replacement.

Inspection of the capacitors on the VRM can be used

in addition to

the week code and Revision level inspection. VRMs manufactured with tantalum capacitors are affected by this issue. VRMs manufactured with ceramic capacitors are not affected by the problem (see figure 2).
