Replacing Cartridges and Printheads for HP Officejet Pro K8600 and K8600dn Color Printers


This document provides information on how to replace ink cartridges and printheads. You can watch a video or follow the steps to perform these tasks.

The following video demonstrates how to install and replace ink cartridges and printheads.

NOTE: This video shows the HP Officejet Pro K8600. The outside of the product might not look the same as your product, but the steps are the same.

Replacing ink cartridges

Before you perform the following steps, make sure the replacement cartridge is compatible with your product. This printer uses four HP 88 ink cartridges: Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. All four colors must be installed for the printer to operate.

Follow these steps to replace the cartridges in the product.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.

  2. Open the cartridge cover.

  3. Remove the old cartridge by grasping it between your thumb and forefinger and pulling it firmly toward you.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
    NOTE: Do not shake the new cartridge before installing it.
  5. Align the new cartridge with the color-coded slot on the product.

  6. With the HP logo facing outward, insert the cartridge into the slot. Press firmly on the cartridge to ensure proper contact.

  7. Close the cartridge cover.

Replacing printheads

Follow these steps to replace the printheads in your printer.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the top cover.

  3. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the left.

    CAUTION: Be careful not to proceed until the carriage is on the left side of the printer. If the carriage does not move to the left automatically, turn the printer off and back on and then try holding down the Resume button ( ) again. The printhead can be damaged if the carriage is not all the way to the left for installation.
  4. Lift the printhead latch.

  5. Lift the handle of a printhead and use it to pull the printhead out of its slot.

  6. Shake the new printhead at least six times while the printhead is still in its packaging.

  7. Remove the new printhead from its package, and then remove its orange protective caps.

    CAUTION: Do not shake the printheads after removing the orange protective caps.
  8. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot (the label on the printhead must match the label on the printhead latch). Press down firmly on the printhead until it snaps into place.

  9. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down until the latch engages.

  10. Close the cover.

  11. The printer should align the printheads automatically in a few minutes, printing an alignment page. If it does not, go to the next section to align manually.

Align the printheads

If you installed the HP software, use the instructions in Method one. If you installed a Plug and Play driver or other driver, use the instructions in Method two.

Method one: Align the printheads in Solution Center

  1. Load unused white paper (if needed).

  2. In HP Solution Center , click Settings , and then click Printer Toolbox .

  3. Select the Services tab, and then click Align Printheads .

    The Align Printheads window opens.

  4. Click Align .

    The printer prints the alignment page.

Method two: Align the printheads from the control panel

  1. Load unused white paper (if needed).

  2. Press and hold the Power button ( ).
  3. Press the Resume button ( ) three times.
  4. Release the Power button ( ).

    The printer prints alignment and calibration pages.
