HP Jetdirect 690n Wireless Print Server - Installation

Verify printer operation

To verify that your printer or MFP is working properly, print a printer configuration page. The configuration page displays the operating status of the printer/MFP.

The steps to print a configuration page vary with each printer/MFP model. For most printers/MFPs with a control panel, a menu map is provided to navigate the control panel menus. To print a configuration page, use the menu map or see your printer/MFP documentation for specific instructions.

The name of the printer configuration page might also vary by printer type. For example, HP Designjet printers provide a Service Configuration printout containing status information.

Install the hardware

HP Jetdirect cards contain electronic components that can be damaged by static electricity through electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, maintain frequent contact with any bare sheet metal surface on the printer. A grounding wrist strap (or similar device) is useful for this purpose. Handle the card carefully at all times. Avoid touching electronic components or circuit paths.
  1. Turn off the printer/MFP, and then disconnect power to the device.

    1: Remove plug

  2. Locate an available EIO slot on the device.

    2: Locate EIO slot

If there are multiple EIO slots, you can typically install the print server into any EIO slot. Check your device manuals for any limitations.
  3. If there is a cover plate over the slot, remove the two retaining screws and then remove the cover plate.

The screws and cover plate can be discarded.

    3: Remove cover plate

  4. Insert the print server card.

    1. Align the card with the guide rails in the slot.

    2. Firmly press the card into the slot until it is seated, then tighten each retaining screw a little at a time until both screws are secure.

    4: Insert EIO card

  5. Proceed to the next section to connect the LAN cable.

Connect the network (LAN) cable

Configure the wireless settings using the included network (LAN) cable, which can be removed after the configuration is complete.

  1. Locate the network cable that is packaged with the print server.

  2. Connect one end of the network cable to a network jack or port and the other end to the RJ-45 connector port on the print server.

    5: Insert network cable

  3. Reconnect power to the printer/MFP, and then turn on the device.

    6: Insert power plug

  4. Wait for the printer/MFP to complete its startup sequence.

  5. Allow the cable connection to enable automatically. (This might take a few minutes.)

  6. Proceed to the next section to verify print server operation.

Verify print server operation

  1. Print an HP Jetdirect configuration page to check for status messages.

Typically, an HP Jetdirect configuration page prints when you print a printer configuration page.

  2. In the upper section of the HP Jetdirect configuration page, look for the status message I/O CARD READY
    .

    7: Jetdirect configuration page

For a description of other messages that might appear on the HP Jetdirect configuration page, see the HP Jetdirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide .
  3. If I/O CARD READY
appears, the print server is operating properly. Proceed to the next section to configure the wireless settings.

If a message other than I/O CARD READY
    appears, try the following:

    • Reinstall the print server hardware.

    • Turn off the printer/MFP, and then turn it on again to re-initialize the print server.

    • Verify that the print server's status indicator light (LED) is providing proper status.

See Interpret the status lights for more information.

Configure the wireless network connection

After installing the print server hardware, configure the connection to the wireless network.

If you reset the print server to factory-default values after configuring a wireless network connection, the network connection will be lost. To reestablish a connection, reconfigure the print server.

Microsoft Windows

To configure the wireless settings on a Microsoft Windows computer:

  1. Insert the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive.

  2. When the HP Jetdirect opening screen appears, click the Install button.

    8: Open wizard

  3. Click the Wireless button to connect the printer to the network using wireless communication (802.11), and then click the Next button.

  4. Select the following setup options:

    • First time wireless printer installation

    • Install the printer on this PC

    9: Select First time

  5. Click the Next button.

  6. Select the option to configure the settings using the network cable.

    10: Configure using cable

  7. Follow the instructions in the remaining screens to complete the wireless configuration.

  8. Print an HP Jetdirect configuration page to confirm the settings.

  9. Disconnect the network cable and allow time for the wireless connection to enable automatically. (This might take a few minutes.)

Mac OS

To configure a wireless network connection using an Apple Macintosh wireless computer, refer to the detailed instructions supplied on the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM.

After you have created a wireless connection, you must use other utilities, such as the HP LaserJet Utility for Mac OS, to configure and manage the printer.

After configuring the wireless settings, disconnect the network cable and allow the wireless connection to enable automatically. (This might take a few minutes.)

UNIX/Linux systems

HP Jetdirect print servers support operation with UNIX/Linux systems over a network. However, the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM does not include installation software for these systems. Use your system utilities to install the device. For more help, visit www.hp.com/support/net_printing .

Add the printer/MFP on each network computer

When the print server is configured for proper operation on your network, you can then add the printer/MFP on each wireless computer. You can set your system to send jobs directly to the printer (peer-to-peer). Or, if your system is a server, you can share the printer so that network clients can access it through the server (client-server).

If you use the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM to install MFP devices, some features (other than printing) might not be accessible.

Microsoft client-server networks

After you have set up the printer/MFP on the server, set up the network clients to access the printer through the server. The procedures depend on the utilities available for your particular clients and network operating system.

For example, if the printer is installed and shared on a Microsoft server, each Windows client can use Add Printer or Network Neighborhood utilities to access the printer.

For more information, refer to the documentation and help supplied with your network operating system.

Microsoft peer-to-peer networks

The following procedure explains how to install the printer/MFP on a Windows 2000, XP, or Vista system using the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM utility.

Installing the printer might be easier if you use the CD‑ROM that came with your network-ready printer/MFP instead of using the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM.
  1. Insert the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive.

    11: Insert Jetdirect CD

  2. When the HP Jetdirect opening screen appears, click the Install button.

  3. In the connection type window, click the Wireless button to connect the printer to the network, and then click the Next button.

  4. To install the printer, select the following option:

    • Wireless settings already configured, install the printer on this computer

    12: Wireless already configured

The HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM does not contain printer driver software, which must be available to install and use the printer.

If you have Internet access, the installation wizard attempts to automatically download and install the printer/MFP driver.

You can also use the CD‑ROM that came with the printer/MFP to install the driver.

  5. Click the Next button.

  6. After the wizard finishes installing the printer, and when prompted, print a test page to verify printer setup.

    • If the test page successfully prints, you have completed printer setup on the computer.

    • If the test page fails to print, perform the troubleshooting tasks displayed by the wizard. Click the Help button for more information.

Mac OS networks

To add and manage printer/MFP devices on Mac OS networks, use the HP printer/MFP utilities (such as the HP LaserJet Utilities) that are provided with your printer. To install the software, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive and wait for the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM icon to appear on the screen.

  2. Double-click the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM icon to display the items in the HP Jetdirect window.

  3. Double-click the printer/MFP software installation icon for the language you want.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

To run and use the printer/MFP software, refer to the help files provided with the software. For more information, read the HP Jetdirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide for the print server, supplied on the CD-ROM.
