HP Jetdirect 690n Wireless Print Server - Installation
Verify printer operation
To verify that your printer or MFP is working properly, print a printer configuration page. The configuration page displays the operating status of the printer/MFP.
The steps to print a configuration page vary with each printer/MFP model. For most printers/MFPs with a control panel, a menu map is provided to navigate the control panel menus. To print a configuration page, use the menu map or see your printer/MFP documentation for specific instructions.
The name of the printer configuration page might also vary by printer type. For example, HP Designjet printers provide a Service Configuration printout containing status information.
Install the hardware
HP Jetdirect cards contain electronic components that can be damaged by static electricity through electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, maintain frequent contact with any bare sheet metal surface on the printer. A grounding wrist strap (or similar device) is useful for this purpose. Handle the card carefully at all times. Avoid touching electronic components or circuit paths.
Connect the network (LAN) cable
Configure the wireless settings using the included network (LAN) cable, which can be removed after the configuration is complete.
Verify print server operation
Configure the wireless network connection
After installing the print server hardware, configure the connection to the wireless network.
If you reset the print server to factory-default values after configuring a wireless network connection, the network connection will be lost. To reestablish a connection, reconfigure the print server.
To configure the wireless settings on a Microsoft Windows computer:
To configure a wireless network connection using an Apple Macintosh wireless computer, refer to the detailed instructions supplied on the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM.
After you have created a wireless connection, you must use other utilities, such as the HP LaserJet Utility for Mac OS, to configure and manage the printer.
After configuring the wireless settings, disconnect the network cable and allow the wireless connection to enable automatically. (This might take a few minutes.)
HP Jetdirect print servers support operation with UNIX/Linux systems over a network. However, the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM does not include installation software for these systems. Use your system utilities to install the device. For more help, visit www.hp.com/support/net_printing .
Add the printer/MFP on each network computer
When the print server is configured for proper operation on your network, you can then add the printer/MFP on each wireless computer. You can set your system to send jobs directly to the printer (peer-to-peer). Or, if your system is a server, you can share the printer so that network clients can access it through the server (client-server).
If you use the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM to install MFP devices, some features (other than printing) might not be accessible.
Microsoft client-server networks
After you have set up the printer/MFP on the server, set up the network clients to access the printer through the server. The procedures depend on the utilities available for your particular clients and network operating system.
For example, if the printer is installed and shared on a Microsoft server, each Windows client can use Add Printer or Network Neighborhood utilities to access the printer.
For more information, refer to the documentation and help supplied with your network operating system.
Microsoft peer-to-peer networks
The following procedure explains how to install the printer/MFP on a Windows 2000, XP, or Vista system using the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM utility.
Installing the printer might be easier if you use the CD‑ROM that came with your network-ready printer/MFP instead of using the HP Jetdirect CD‑ROM.
Mac OS networks
To add and manage printer/MFP devices on Mac OS networks, use the HP printer/MFP utilities (such as the HP LaserJet Utilities) that are provided with your printer. To install the software, follow these steps:
To run and use the printer/MFP software, refer to the help files provided with the software. For more information, read the HP Jetdirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide for the print server, supplied on the CD-ROM.
