HP Notebook PCs - Using MediaSmart Entertainment Software
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs using Windows Vista
This document provides an overview of the MediaSmart entertainment software and its various applications. For more detailed information on each of the MediaSmart applications, select Start, type MediaSmart and select MediaSmart Help from the results list.
To open MediaSmart:
When you open MediaSmart, the SmartMenu displays icons representing the available media categories as shown below.

Playing DVDs, Video CDs, or BDs
To open MediaSmart DVD mode, click the DVD icon on the SmartMenu or by any of the following:
NOTE: If the computer has been set up to require a password, you are be prompted to log in to Windows. MediaSmart starts immediately after you log in to Windows.
If this is the first time a DVD has been used or if the region setting on a supported DVD does not match the region setting for your optical drive, a message about changing the DVD region setting is displayed.
Click Settings, Region Code, and then select the correct region from the list provided. For more information, refer to the User Guide included with your computer.
NOTE: To prevent the loss of playback or playback quality, observe the following guidelines:

MediaSmart music mode provides convenient access to your music collections.
NOTE: MediaSmart supports MP3 format for music playback.
To listen to MP3 files on a CD or from your Public Music folder on your hard drive:
▲ Open the SmartMenu, and then click the Music icon.
To manage the music files in the Public Music folder, follow these steps:
To play MP3 files on your hard drive when your computer is off or in the Sleep state, follow these steps:
NOTE: Files from an audio CD are automatically added to the music library, but they cannot be saved to a playlist.
You can view digital pictures in JPEG format either individually or in a slide show. You can also edit or print individual pictures.
To open MediaSmart photo mode, click the Photo icon on the SmartMenu. You can browse pictures by dates, folders, all photos, or slideshows. If a removable drive containing pictures is installed, the drive is displayed in the navigation bar.
Viewing and recording TV
NOTE: Before you can use MediaSmart in live TV mode, you must set up the TV tuner for your computer using the instructions in the printed User Guide included with your computer or to www.hp.com , see support and troubleshooting information.
Enter your Product name and number, click you model number from the list supplied, select Manuals, Multimedia - Windows Vista.
You can view TV in the MediaSmart TV mode, using either a TV tuner or live streaming over the Internet. You can also schedule recordings and view recorded TV shows on your computer.
NOTE: Some features of MediaSmart TV mode, such as Internet streaming, are not available in all regions and require additional hardware or services, such as a high-speed Internet connection.

In MediaSmart, you can view video files on your computer. The following table lists supported formats.
Using the webcam
To view your webcam, follow these steps:
To start the webcam, click Video icon. Then select the Webcam button at the bottom of the screen. This starts the webcam operation and allows you to record webcam segments of 10 minutes or longer.

Managing the playlist
The playlist can be used in music and video mode. The playlist is a list of selections from the following sources:
MediaSmart remembers and displays your latest playlist while you are viewing pictures and videos.
NOTE: When you insert an audio CD into the optical drive, the songs on the CD are automatically added to the music library, but they cannot be saved in a playlist. If you want to add other files (such as video files or MP3 files) to the playlist, you must do that manually.
Adding a music selection to the playlist
To add a CD track to the playlist, follow these steps:
NOTE: Tracks from an audio CD can be moved to the playlist and played, but they cannot be saved as a playlist.
When the computer is set to play MP3 files from the Public Music folder on your hard drive, the contents of the Public Music folder are displayed in the music library. Only MP3 files, not folders, can be added to the playlist.
To add an MP3 file in the Source directory to the playlist, click and drag it to the playlist.
NOTE: To add a song in a subfolder to the playlist, you must first open the folder.
Adding a video selection to the playlist
To add a video selection to the playlist, follow these steps:
Removing a selection from the playlist
To remove all items from the playlist, click Clear All in the playlist controls at the lower-right side of the screen.
To remove a specific item from the playlist, click the item and drag it back to the library.
Reordering selections on the playlist
To reorder the selections on a playlist, use the mouse to drag and drop them into the desired order.
Saving a playlist
You can save a playlist that you create in MediaSmart. Music playlists are saved on your hard drive in the Users\(username)\Music\Playlists directory, and picture and video playlists are saved in the Users\(user name)\Pictures\Playlists directory.
To save a playlist in music mode, click Save as Playlist, type a name for the playlist, and then click Save.
To save a playlist in video mode, type a name for the playlist in the box, and then click Save.
