HP Notebook PCs - Using MediaSmart Entertainment Software

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs using Windows Vista

This document provides an overview of the MediaSmart entertainment software and its various applications. For more detailed information on each of the MediaSmart applications, select Start, type MediaSmart and select MediaSmart Help from the results list.

Using MediaSmart

To open MediaSmart:

  • Click Start, type MediaSmart and select MediaSmart from the list supplied.

  • Some HP computers come with a MediaSmart button located on the touch-sensitive control strip. If your computer is so equipped, you can open MediaSmart by touching the button.

When you open MediaSmart, the SmartMenu displays icons representing the available media categories as shown below.

SmartMenu

The icons are from left to right:

  • DVD - You can view movies on DVD, video CD, or Blu-ray Disc (BD) in the MediaSmart DVD mode.

  • Music - Provides access to your collection of music.

  • Photos - Provides access to you photo collection. It also allows you to edit, print, and upload your photos to a web-based application such as Snapfish..

  • TV - Allows access to TV channels, internet TV, and allows you to record and playback TV shows.

  • Video Mode - Allows you to view video files on your computer.

You can also access the SmartMenu from within each media mode:

  • If you are playing a DVD, click the Pause button, and then click to display the SmartMenu.
  • In all other modes, click to display the SmartMenu.

Playing DVDs, Video CDs, or BDs

To open MediaSmart DVD mode, click the DVD icon on the SmartMenu or by any of the following:

  • When your computer is on, insert a DVD, video CD, or BD into the disc tray of the optical drive and close the disc tray. (For more information, refer to the User Guide included with your computer.)

  • If there is a DVD, video CD, or BD in the optical drive, it automatically plays.

    – or –

  • If no media is in the optical drive, insert a DVD, video CD, or BD into the disc tray of the optical drive and close the tray. For more information, refer to the User Guide included with your computer.

NOTE: If the computer has been set up to require a password, you are be prompted to log in to Windows. MediaSmart starts immediately after you log in to Windows.

If this is the first time a DVD has been used or if the region setting on a supported DVD does not match the region setting for your optical drive, a message about changing the DVD region setting is displayed.

Click Settings, Region Code, and then select the correct region from the list provided. For more information, refer to the User Guide included with your computer.

NOTE: To prevent the loss of playback or playback quality, observe the following guidelines:
  • Save your work and close all open software before playing a DVD, CD or BD.

  • Do not dock or undock the computer using an optional docking device while playing a disc.

The DVD menu bar displays at the bottom of the screen as shown below:

The icons are from left to right:

  • Settings - You can view movies on video CD, DVD, or Blu-ray Disc (BD) in the MediaSmart DVD mode.

  • DVD eject - Ejects the optical disc.

  • Menu - Opens the following menus:

    • Title Menu -

      Select play, set up, special features, or select scenes.
    • Root Menu -

      Select from a list of special features.
    • Subtitles Menu -

      Select subtitle language or no subtitles.
    • Audio Menu -

      Select from audio options.
    • Chapter Menu -

      Select scenes on the DVD.
  • Bookmark - Set and name bookmarks for the DVD being played.

  • Fast reverse - Fast reverses the DVD.

  • Play or Pause - Plays or pauses the DVD.

  • Fast forward - Fast forwards the DVD.

Playing music

MediaSmart music mode provides convenient access to your music collections.

NOTE: MediaSmart supports MP3 format for music playback.

To listen to MP3 files on a CD or from your Public Music folder on your hard drive:

▲ Open the SmartMenu, and then click the Music icon.

To manage the music files in the Public Music folder, follow these steps:

  1. To access this folder outside of MediaSmart, click Start, and then click Computer.

  2. Click Public.

  3. Click Public Music.

To play MP3 files on your hard drive when your computer is off or in the Sleep state, follow these steps:

  1. Press the MediaSmart button on your computer to open MediaSmart.

    NOTE: If the computer has been set up to require a password, you are be prompted to log in to Windows. MediaSmart starts immediately after you log in to Windows.
  2. Click the Music icon to open music mode.

  3. Click a category in the navigation bar at the top of the control panel.

  4. Double-click a song in the music library, and it begins playing.

    • Click Rewind, Stop, or Fast-forward in the playback controls at the top of the screen.

    • Adjust the volume using the volume control on your computer.

NOTE: Files from an audio CD are automatically added to the music library, but they cannot be saved to a playlist.

Viewing pictures

You can view digital pictures in JPEG format either individually or in a slide show. You can also edit or print individual pictures.

To open MediaSmart photo mode, click the Photo icon on the SmartMenu. You can browse pictures by dates, folders, all photos, or slideshows. If a removable drive containing pictures is installed, the drive is displayed in the navigation bar.

  1. From the navigation bar, click the category containing the pictures you want to view, and then click the folder that you would like to view.

    All of the pictures in the selected folder are displayed in grid view.

  2. Click a picture to view or edit the picture details.

Viewing and recording TV

NOTE: Before you can use MediaSmart in live TV mode, you must set up the TV tuner for your computer using the instructions in the printed User Guide included with your computer or to www.hp.com , see support and troubleshooting information.

Enter your Product name and number, click you model number from the list supplied, select Manuals, Multimedia - Windows Vista.

You can view TV in the MediaSmart TV mode, using either a TV tuner or live streaming over the Internet. You can also schedule recordings and view recorded TV shows on your computer.

NOTE: Some features of MediaSmart TV mode, such as Internet streaming, are not available in all regions and require additional hardware or services, such as a high-speed Internet connection.

The MediaSmart TV mode supports the following options:

  • Internet TV—Plays current TV broadcasts from the Internet.

  • HP TV Tuner—Plays current TV broadcasts

  • Recorded TV—Displays files recorded from the TV

  • Slingbox—Plays current TV broadcasts from your home TV (select models only).

Viewing TV

To view live television, follow these steps:

  1. Click the TV icon on the SmartMenu to open the MediaSmart TV mode.

  2. Double-click the receiver name, such as Slingbox, HP Digital TV Tuner, or Internet TV, and then double-click the preview pane. The TV broadcast is displayed in full-screen format.

    – or –

    Double-click Channel List, located below the receiver name in the content pane. A list of available channels is displayed. Double-click a channel.

  3. To view the TV broadcast in full-screen format, click the Full Screen icon in the playlist controls at the lower-right side of the screen. To return to preview mode, click the Full Screen icon at the upper right of the display. To view a previously recorded TV program, follow these steps:

  4. In the content pane, double-click Recorded TV. The console is refreshed to display a list of any programs you have recorded.

  5. Double-click the programs you want to view to add them to the playlist.

  6. Click Play in the playback controls at the bottom of the screen to view the programs.

Viewing Internet TV

NOTE: Before you can view streaming TV from the Internet, you must be connected to the Internet.
  1. Open Internet TV mode by clicking the TV icon on the SmartMenu.

  2. Select a Provider List. Current HP Internet TV providers include internet TV, Next TV, Learn more about HP, and TVU.

  3. Select a channel, and MediaSmart displays the selected content.

  4. Clickable links are presented in some advertisements and videos for you to learn more about a product or show. If you click a link, the selected Web site launches. Click the back button in the web browser to close the Web site and resume playing the video.

  5. When you are viewing video content in full screen, the elapsed time and total time are displayed in the left corner. The content name and the program title are displayed in the upper-right corner.

Recording TV broadcasts

To set a recording schedule, follow these steps:

  1. Click the TV icon on the SmartMenu to open the MediaSmart TV mode.

  2. Click the Info/More settings control in the upper-right corner of the screen, and select New Recording.
  3. Select the channel you want to record, the scheduling interval, and the recording date and time.

  4. To activate the recording schedule, click Apply.

To remove or change a scheduled recording, follow these steps:

  1. Click the TV icon on the SmartMenu to open the MediaSmart TV mode.

  2. Double-click the receiver name, such as HP Digital TV Tuner, in the content pane.

  3. Double-click the Schedule folder. An overview of the scheduled recordings is displayed. If no schedules are listed, no recordings have been scheduled.

  4. To modify a recording schedule, double-click a listing, and then make changes

  5. To remove a recording schedule, click a listing, and then click the Delete control in the playlist controls at the lower-right side of the screen.

Viewing videos

In MediaSmart, you can view video files on your computer. The following table lists supported formats.

DivX and MJPEG codecs are supported only if DivX software is installed on the computer.

Using the webcam

To view your webcam, follow these steps:

To start the webcam, click Video icon. Then select the Webcam button at the bottom of the screen. This starts the webcam operation and allows you to record webcam segments of 10 minutes or longer.

To use the webcam for internet conferencing, HP recommends using one of the following:

  • HP QuickPlay

  • YouCam

  • Windows Live Messenger

Managing the playlist

The playlist can be used in music and video mode. The playlist is a list of selections from the following sources:

  • Public Music folder

  • Public Videos folder

MediaSmart remembers and displays your latest playlist while you are viewing pictures and videos.

NOTE: When you insert an audio CD into the optical drive, the songs on the CD are automatically added to the music library, but they cannot be saved in a playlist. If you want to add other files (such as video files or MP3 files) to the playlist, you must do that manually.

Adding a music selection to the playlist

To add a CD track to the playlist, follow these steps:

  1. Click Audio CD in the navigation bar at the top of the music control panel.

  2. Click a track in the music library, and the track begins playing.

  3. To move the track to the playlist, click and drag it to the Playlist pane, or click the track and click Add to List.

NOTE: Tracks from an audio CD can be moved to the playlist and played, but they cannot be saved as a playlist.

When the computer is set to play MP3 files from the Public Music folder on your hard drive, the contents of the Public Music folder are displayed in the music library. Only MP3 files, not folders, can be added to the playlist.

To add an MP3 file in the Source directory to the playlist, click and drag it to the playlist.

NOTE: To add a song in a subfolder to the playlist, you must first open the folder.

Adding a video selection to the playlist

To add a video selection to the playlist, follow these steps:

  1. Click a category of videos in the navigation bar at the top of the video control panel. If you selected a folder, click the folder to display the videos in the folder.

  2. Click the plus sign (+) on a video to add it to a playlist.

Removing a selection from the playlist

To remove all items from the playlist, click Clear All in the playlist controls at the lower-right side of the screen.

To remove a specific item from the playlist, click the item and drag it back to the library.

Reordering selections on the playlist

To reorder the selections on a playlist, use the mouse to drag and drop them into the desired order.

Saving a playlist

You can save a playlist that you create in MediaSmart. Music playlists are saved on your hard drive in the Users\(username)\Music\Playlists directory, and picture and video playlists are saved in the Users\(user name)\Pictures\Playlists directory.

To save a playlist in music mode, click Save as Playlist, type a name for the playlist, and then click Save.

To save a playlist in video mode, type a name for the playlist in the box, and then click Save.

Getting updates and enhancements

Update from HP

To locate and download MediaSmart updates, go to HP Drivers and Downloads page.

  1. If necessary, enter your product name and number or allow the system to automatically detect your device.

  2. Select your operating system.

  3. Locate the Software - Multimedia section.

  4. Select the MediaSmart update from the list and click Download

  5. Save the softpaq at a location that is easy to locate such as the desktop.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Update from MediaSmart

The MediaSmart updates and enhancements console provides an area where you can easily review and download the latest product upgrades and enhancements. To open MediaSmart updates and enhancements mode:

  1. Click the Settings control in the DVD control panel, and then click the Update tab.
  2. Click the listed update.

  3. Click Download and follow the on-screen instructions.
