HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909a), 8500 Premier (A909n), and 8500 Wireless (A909g) All-in-One Printers - Configuring the All-in-One Fax for a Distinctive Ring Pattern

Introduction

This document explains how to set a distinctive-ring pattern when using the HP All-in-One on a single phone line with two or more phone numbers.

Distinctive Ring basics

Distinctive-ring service is an optional service available from many telephone companies. The distinctive-ring service permits you to assign more than one telephone number to the same telephone line. You can use a single phone line for both voice and fax calls, because you assign a unique phone number and ring pattern for incoming fax calls. When a fax comes in, each telephone number makes a distinctive ringing sound, such as a single ring, double ring, or triple ring.

NOTE: The Distinctive Ring Service is the name HP and others use to describe this feature. Distinctive Ring is also known as:
  • Call Sign

  • Custom Ring

  • Ident-a-Call

  • Ident-a-Ring

  • Ident-a-Ring

  • Multi Ring

  • Personalized Ringing

  • ringmaster

  • Ringmaster

  • Smart Ring

  • Teen-Ring

The Distinctive Ring Service allows the HP product to work similarly to a dedicated fax line. For example, if an HP fax product and a telephone are both connected to a single telephone line with a distinctive ring service, one telephone number can be assigned for fax calls only and another phone number can be assigned for voice calls only.

NOTE: Faxes cannot be received or sent when the phone line is in use. Even if the HP fax product has a separate telephone number, it is still sharing the same phone line.

If you subscribe to a distinctive-ring service from your telephone company, you can configure your HP fax product to answer a specific ring pattern and ignore other ring patterns.

Set the Distinctive Ring Service

Using the menus on the product control panel, follow these steps to set a distinctive ring pattern.

Step one: Turn on Auto Answer

Press the Auto Answer button on the product control panel. A light turns on, indicating that Auto Answer is on.

Step two: Set the distinctive ring pattern

Follow these steps to change the answer ring pattern, depending on your product model.
