Original Document Release.
IMPORTANT: This firmware upgrade is required to prevent the issue detailed below. HP strongly recommends immediate application of this upgrade. Neglecting to perform the required action could leave the server in an unstable condition, which could potentially result in sub-optimal server performance. By disregarding this notification, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors.

The HP SATA hard drive models listed in the Scope section (below) configured with firmware versions prior to HPG6, may experience erroneous drive failure indications. When this occurs, the drive will display a solid amber LED, but upon a hot-plug removal and re-seat or server reboot, the drive will function normally. Erroneous failures may occur when the disk drives appear to be idle or when on-line and active. This abnormal behavior has been corrected in firmware version HPG6.

In most cases, the drive will operate correctly following a hot-plug removal and re-seat or a power-cycle of the system. However, in some cases, the drive may have already exceeded the Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T) thresholds as indicated by either a flashing amber LED or as reported during the Power-On Self-Test (POST). If this occurs, the drive will require replacement. Otherwise, it may be possible and is recommended to save the drive and data by upgrading the firmware as described in the Resolution section below.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Seagate has recently informed HP of a potential issue concerning certain Seagate SATA hard drive models associated with ProLiant servers and StorageWorks products. The symptom of an affected drive is the inability of a system to communicate with the drive immediately following a power-cycle. Based on Seagate's analysis, the condition rarely occurs.
The HPG6 firmware upgrade detailed in the Resolution section below includes the fix for this potential Seagate issue. Specific hard drive models and associated ProLiant servers are listed below.

To locate the corrected firmware, perform the following:

1. Go to http://www.hp.com/ .

2. Select "Support & Drivers."

3. Enter the drive model in the "Search" field as shown below:

4. Select the latest firmware version available on the "Search Results" web page.

5. After the hard drive firmware flash is complete, reboot (power-cycle) the server twice to insure that the firmware upgrade takes effect.

IMPORTANT: After the Hard Drive Firmware Update has been applied, the system must be restarted for the firmware to complete. At POST of the initial reboot, during the array controller initialization, the hard drive firmware flash will complete. Once the drive firmware flash reaches 100 percent, the boot process will continue. A manual reboot is then required to ensure that the hard drive firmware is in place and active.

For ProLiant 100-series servers and certain ProLiant 300-series servers:

For ProLiant 100-series servers and ProLiant 300-series servers using the HP Integrated SATA RAID Controller, HP SC40Ge HBA, or HP SC44Ge HBA, use the Offline Flash Tool for SATA HDD FW available for download as SoftPaq SP43542 at the following URL:

SoftPaq SP43542 contains a USB Key based offline SATA hard drive firmware upgrade utility. The utility will upgrade SATA hard drives to Firmware Version HPG6. Follow the instructions in the "100 series USB Drive FW Update Tool how-to.doc" file that is created when SP43542.EXE is executed. The "how-to" document contains additional information and sample upgrade instructions for select platforms.

For additional information, refer to the HP drive key boot utility for ProLiant servers guide at the following URL:

If the drive displays a solid amber LED, perform either of the following actions and then upgrade the hard drive firmware:

  • Power-cycle the drives. If they are located in the server, power-cycle the server. If they are located in an external enclosure, power-cycle the enclosure.

OR

  • Hot-remove and then re-seat the drive, or hot-add a drive into the array.

If the drive displays a flashing amber LED, the drive has exceeded the SMART thresholds and must be replaced, or if the drive displays a solid amber LED immediately following a hot-plug or power cycle, it must be replaced.
