Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet F4210 and F4213 All-in-One Printers

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the printer control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

NOTE: There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution in the order presented until you resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are off

In this normal condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Ink Level / Check Print Cartridge lights : Off

  • Resume light : Off

  • Power button light : Off

  • Cause

    The printer is off.

Solutions

Solution one: Turn on the printer

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

If the printer does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the printer is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and plugged into an electrical outlet.

  1. Check the rear of the printer to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.

  2. Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

  3. Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

  4. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  5. If the printer does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Press the Power button more slowly

The printer might not respond if you press the Power button too quickly.

Press the Power button once slowly to turn on the printer.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power

Follow these steps to first reset the power module on the power cord, and then test the power on the printer.

Step one: Reset the power module

The power module has a safety feature that protects the printer during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, the power module might need to be reset. Use the following steps to reset the power module.

  1. Disconnect the power supply from the rear of the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, power strip, or surge protector.

  3. If the printer uses a power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the cord from the power module.

  4. Wait 15 seconds.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the power module.

  6. Plug the power cord back into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector .

  7. Check to see if the power module has an LED.

    • If the power module does not have an LED, continue to the next step.

    • If the power module has an LED, check to see if the LED lights up.

      • If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window .

      • If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.

Step two: Test the power on the printer

Follow these steps to test the power on the printer.

  1. Reconnect the power supply to the rear of the printer.

  2. Press and then quickly release the Power button to start a power on/off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

    If you press and hold the Power button too long, the printer might turn on and then turn off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button ( ) again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different All-in-One

If you have another available power cord that is compatible with the printer, use the alternate cord to test the power.

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Connect the alternate power cord to the rear of the printer.

  5. Plug the alternate power cord into the wall outlet.

  6. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  • If the printer turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , to buy a compatible power cord.

  • If the printer does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power button light blinks

In this normal condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Ink Level / Check Print Cartridge lights : Off

  • Resume light : Off

  • Power button light : Blinking

  • Cause

    The printer is busy copying, scanning, printing, or performing a maintenance job, such as alignment. The front access door or the cartridge access door might be open.

Solutions

Solution one: Close the front access door and the cartridge access door

Make sure that the front access door and the cartridge access door are completely closed.

You might have to press the Resume button ( ) again to resume the task.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Wait for the printer to complete the job

Wait for the printer to finish processing a copying, scanning, printing, or maintenance job.

  • If the printer completes the job normally , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the printer is unresponsive for more than 60 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Cancel and then retry the task

Follow these steps to cancel and then retry the current task.

  1. Press the Cancel button ( ) on the control panel.

  2. If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button for three seconds to turn off the printer.

    • If the printer successfully turns off , press the Power button to turn on the printer, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the printer again to perform the intended task.

    • If the printer does not turn off , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the printer

Follow these steps to reset the printer.

Step one: Perform a power reset

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button and the Cancel button ( ) at the same time.

  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a self-test page.

    NOTE: It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Check Print Cartridge lights blink

In this error condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Ink Level / Check Print Cartridge lights : Blinking

  • Resume light : Off

  • Power button light : On

  • Cause

    The cartridge access door is open, or a problem exists with the cartridges.

Solutions

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridge access door is completely closed.

You might have to press the Resume button ( ) again to resume the task.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Install the cartridges

Follow these steps to install the cartridges in the printer. If you have already installed the cartridges, proceed to the next solution to check cartridge compatibility.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Load plain white paper in the paper tray.

  3. Adjust the paper width guide inward until it rests against the side of the paper.

  4. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  5. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then remove the new cartridge from its packaging.

  6. Pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles.

    3 - Ink nozzles under the tape
    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause bad electrical connections, clogged ink nozzles, or poor print quality.

  7. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  8. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  9. Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridge into its designated slot.

  10. Close the cartridge access door.

  11. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  12. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  13. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

  14. Make sure that the USB cable is securely connected to the rear of the printer and to your computer.

  15. Try the intended task again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Check cartridge compatibility

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.

  1. Go to the HP SureSupply website.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure that the country/region location is correct.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.

Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.

  1. Locate the cartridge selection number on the cartridge label.

  2. If your cartridges are not compatible, replace them with compatible HP cartridges, and then go to the section in this document for installing new cartridges.

    NOTE: HP cannot guarantee the quality of refilled or remanufactured cartridges.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Remove and reinstall the cartridges

Follow these steps to make sure that both cartridges are installed and seated correctly.

Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are removing to release it from its slot.

  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.

  5. If the cartridge has protective tape covering its nozzles, use the pink pull tab to remove it.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause bad electrical connections, clogged ink nozzles, or poor print quality.

  6. Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.

Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  2. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  3. Repeat these steps to reinsert the other cartridge into its designated slot.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  6. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  7. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

  8. Make sure that the USB cable is securely connected to the rear of the printer and to your computer.

  9. Try the intended task again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Check for carriage obstructions

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.

Step one: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the front access door.

  3. Without turning off the printer , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

    CAUTION: You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Look inside the printer to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

    NOTE: You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
  6. Reach inside the printer through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer , move the carriage to the left side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

  7. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.

  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.

  9. Close the front access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  11. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  12. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  13. Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button and the Cancel button ( ) at the same time.

  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a self-test page.

    NOTE: It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Clean the cartridges and inside the printer

Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • Dry foam rubber swabs, a lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)

      CAUTION: Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the printer.
  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  3. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  5. Press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are replacing to release it from its slot. Then slide the cartridge out of the carriage.

    NOTE: The black cartridge belongs in the slot on the right. The color cartridge belongs in the slot on the left.

    CAUTION: Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the printer for more than 30 minutes.
  6. Hold the cartridge by its sides.

  7. Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.

  8. Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts.

  9. Allow the contacts to dry for about 10 minutes.

  10. Use a second moistened foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth to clean the gold-colored electrical contacts in the carriage, inside the printer.

  11. Wait about 10 minutes to allow the electrical contacts to dry, or use a new swab or dry, clean cloth to dry them.

  12. To reinsert the cartridge, hold it by its sides, and then slide it forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  13. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  14. Repeat these steps to clean the contacts on the other cartridge and in the other side of the carriage.

  15. Close the cartridge access door.

  16. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  17. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  18. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  19. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  20. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

  21. Try the intended task again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution seven: Replace a defective cartridge

One or both of the cartridges might be defective. Before performing these steps, make sure that the replacement cartridge is compatible with your printer. Follow these steps to determine which cartridge is defective, and then remove and replace that cartridge.

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.

  1. Go to the HP SureSupply website.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure that the country/region location is correct.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.

Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  3. Remove the black cartridge by pressing lightly on the top of the cartridge to release it from its slot. Then slide the cartridge out of the carriage.

    NOTE: The black cartridge belongs in the slot on the right.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Check the printer control panel for blinking lights:

    • If the Power button light blinks , replace the color cartridge.

    • If the Power button light does not blink , replace the black cartridge.

    NOTE: Turn on the computer to see the status message for more details.
    NOTE: If the cartridge is being removed because it is low or out of ink, recycle it. The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many regions, and is free of charge.
  6. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  7. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then remove the new cartridge from its packaging.

  8. Pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles.

  14. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  15. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  16. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

  17. Try the intended task again.

Solution eight: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: One or both of the Check Print Cartridge lights are on

In this error condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Ink Level / Check Print Cartridge lights : Either the black, the color, or both Check Print Cartridge lights are on

  • Resume light : Off

  • Power button light : On

  • Cause

    The cartridge indicated by the on light (black, color, or both) is low on ink, or one of the cartridges is missing or has been removed.

Solutions

Solution one: Replace the cartridge that is low on ink

Follow these steps to replace the cartridge that is low on ink when the print quality from that cartridge is no longer acceptable.

Step one: Remove the cartridge
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are removing to release it from its slot.

  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.

  5. Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge as needed.

Step two: Install the new cartridge
  1. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.

  2. Pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause bad electrical connections, clogged ink nozzles, or poor print quality.

  3. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide it forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  4. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  5. Repeat these steps to install the other cartridge into its designated slot as needed.

  6. Close the cartridge access door.

  7. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  8. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  9. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

Workaround: Print in ink-backup mode (single-cartridge mode)

You can print with only one cartridge installed (ink-backup mode, also called single-cartridge mode). The ink-backup mode initiates when you remove a cartridge from the carriage. During ink-backup mode, the printer can only print jobs from the computer. You cannot initiate a print job from the control panel (such as copying or scanning an original).

The printer prints more slowly in this mode, and printouts might be of lesser quality. If you print with only the black cartridge, no color will print. If you print with only the color cartridge, no black ink will print.

NOTE: When the printer operates in ink-backup mode, a message is displayed on the computer screen. If the message is displayed and you have installed two cartridges in the printer, make sure that you have removed the protective piece of plastic tape from each cartridge. When plastic tape covers the cartridge electrical contacts, the printer cannot detect an installed cartridge.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Press lightly on the top of the cartridge that is low on ink to release it from its slot.

  5. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.

  6. Close the cartridge access door.

  7. Continue to print as normal.

    NOTE: You might see a recurring message on your computer that tells you that the printer is in single-cartridge mode. The Attention light also continuously blinks in ink-backup mode. These symptoms recur until you install two working cartridges.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Reset the printer

Follow these steps to reset the printer.

Step one: Perform a power reset

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button and the Cancel button ( ) at the same time.

  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a self-test page.

    NOTE: It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power button light is on, and all the other lights are off

In this error condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Ink Level / Check Print Cartridge lights : Off

  • Resume light : Off

  • Power button light : On

  • Cause

    The protective tape on one or both of the cartridges was not removed.

Solutions

Solution one: Remove the protective tape from the cartridges

Follow these steps to check for and remove the protective tape on the cartridges.

Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer.

    NOTE: If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are removing to release it from its slot.

  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.

  5. If the cartridge has protective tape covering its nozzles, use the pink pull tab to remove it.

  6. Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.

Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  2. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  3. Repeat these steps to reinsert the other cartridge into its designated slot.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

  6. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  7. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Resume button ( ) to complete the alignment.

  8. Make sure that the USB cable is securely connected to the rear of the printer and to your computer.

  9. Try the intended task again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

In this error condition , the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

  • Resume light : Blinking

  • Power button light : On

  • Cause

    The carriage is stalled.

Solutions

Solution one: Check for carriage obstructions

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.

Step one: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Open the front access door.

  3. Without turning off the printer , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

    CAUTION: You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Look inside the printer to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

    NOTE: You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
  6. Reach inside the printer through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer , move the carriage to the left side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

  7. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.

  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.

  9. Close the front access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  11. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  12. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  13. Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
