For the workstations mentioned in the scope section, Seagate has recently informed HP of a potential issue and has recommended updating the Seagate hard drives at the earliest possible convenience to avoid any further problems.

The following are observed when the issue occurs during or after Power-On Self Test (POST):
  • During POST - Most systems may stop responding and display an error message, Non-System disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

  • After POST - System will begin loading the operating system (displaying the Microsoft Windows logo) before hanging.

Once the issue was identified, the potentially affected Seagate SATA hard drive models were put on hold and HP discontinued the use of the potentially affected Seagate hard drives in manufacturing.

HP has released firmware updates to prevent the unlikely event that a drive exhibits this issue. Please check our web site at and visit the customer support web page for the HP firmware update for the product.

CAUTION: HP customers should not apply the hard drive firmware available on the Seagate website.

The table below provides the softpaq numbers on the Web site required to update the firmware for the Seagate hard drives.

Follow these steps to update firmware for the Seagate hard drives:

  1. Click here to go to the HP Workstation support site .

  2. Select your workstation model.

  3. Select Download drivers and software.

  4. Select your operating system.

  5. Select Firmware.

  6. Download the firmware package for your specific drive and carefully read the instructions before proceeding.

NOTE: The firmware update utility cannot upgrade Seagate hard drives that are members of RAID arrays. However, it is possible to temporarily take the system out of RAID mode, perform the upgrade on the target drives, and then put the system back into RAID mode. Because the firmware upgrade does not affect the data contents of the drives, including their RAID membership data, the array will operate normally when the RAID mode is restored. In all the supported workstation models for this update, the SATA controller mode can be managed via options in the BIOS F10 Setup interface. For specific instructions, see the manual for your computer model. This mode management does NOT involve deleting or creating RAID arrays.
NOTE: This is applicable to 750GB and 1000GB softpaqs only - these packages contain a utility that will create a DOS bootable diskette (floppy), CD, or USB key that will contain all the necessary files to update the identified hard drives. You can also simply copy the update utility files to a bootable medium you already have. (applicable to all three softpaqs):The CD method on HP xw6600 and xw8600 workstations also requires that the SATA controller be taken out of RAID mode. The CD method of update is not supported on HP xw9400 workstation. Using the USB key method on HP xw9400 workstation, it is necessary to disable the SATA Option ROM in order for the utility to successfully scan the SATA bus. Some of these temporary changes reduce the number of active SATA ports. If many target hard drives are present, they may need to be temporarily connected to lower ports for the upgrade.

For systems already experiencing the issue, please contact the appropriate technical support center for your country to receive a replacement hard drive. Use the following link to find contact information for support centers in your country or region:
