HP Officejet 6500 and Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One Printer Series, and Officejet 6500A and Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer Series - Printed Text or Image Is Crooked or Skewed

Issue

When you try to print on an HP Officejet 6500 or Officejet Pro 8500, 8500 Wireless, or 8500 Premier All-in-One, the printout is crooked, skewed, or off-center.

Solutions

Follow these steps in the order presented until the issue is resolved.

Solution one: Check and reload the paper

Follow these steps to check the paper and make sure it is loaded correctly.

  1. Lift the output tray cover.

  2. Remove and check the paper.

    • Use only plain, unused, white paper.

    • Make sure the paper is in good condition. Do not use paper that is folded, torn, stapled, or crumpled.

    • Use only one paper type at a time. Do not mix different types of paper.

  3. Fan the paper before loading it into the paper tray to make sure that the pages do not stick together. The pages should feed into the product one page at a time.

  4. Load the paper into the paper tray, and then make sure the paper width aligns with the paper width guide, and that it is not higher than the paper height guide.

    CAUTION: Do not add paper to the tray while the product is printing.
  5. Slide the media guides in the tray to adjust them for the paper size that you have loaded, make sure they rest firmly against the paper, and then lower the output tray cover.

  6. Pull out the extension from the output tray.

  7. Try again to print.

If this solution did not resolve the issue, continue to Solution two.

Solution two: Print a test page and check the skew tolerance

Follow these steps to print a test page from the product control panel, and then check the skew tolerance.
  1. Print a test page from the product control panel. To do this, press and hold the OK () and Cancel () buttons, and then release both buttons.

    The test page prints.

  2. Check the page skew. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Find the measure marks on the test page.

    2. Fold the test page in half, making sure that the paper edge is even with the horizontal lines of the measure marks printed on the sides.

    3. Hold the page up to a light source, and then check whether the vertical line of the top mark is between the two vertical lines of the bottom mark.

    • If the top vertical line is inside the bottom two vertical lines, then the skew tolerance is not causing the issue. Skip to Solution four.

    • If the top vertical line is outside the bottom two vertical lines, then the skew tolerance is likely causing the issue. Continue to Solution three.

Solution three: Clean the rear paper rollers

To clean the rollers in the rear of the product and in the two-sided printing accessory (duplexer), follow these steps.

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product, and then disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.

  2. Turn the product so that you can access the rear of the product.

  3. Push in the buttons on either side of the duplexer, and then remove the duplexer

  4. In the rear access area, look for any jammed paper. If you find any, grasp the jammed paper with both hands, and then pull it straight out of the product.

  5. Lightly dampen a clean lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

    NOTE: Use only bottled or distilled water to clean the rollers. Tap water can contain contaminants that can damage the product.
  6. Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the rear rollers. Rotate the rollers manually to clean them completely.

  7. If you do not see any jammed paper in the rear access area, push the latch on the top of the duplexer, and then lower its cover. Remove any jammed paper from inside the duplexer.

  8. Check the rollers in the duplexer for any torn or loose scraps of paper. Remove any scraps of paper that you find.

  9. Close the duplexer cover, and then reinsert the duplexer into the rear access area of the product.

  10. Press the duplexer in firmly, until you hear it click securely into place.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet, and then press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  12. Try again to print.
