DESCRIPTION

Under extremely rare circumstances, all server blades in an HP BladeSystem c-Class c7000 Enclosure or HP BladeSystem c-Class c3000 Enclosure may lose network connectivity. This issue only occurs when ALL of the following conditions are true:

  • Server blade is configured with an HP NC532i Dual Port 10GbE Multifunction BL-c Adapter or HP NC532m Dual Port 10GbE Multifunction BL-c Adapter.
  • Server blade is running the HP NC-Series Broadcom 1Gb and 10GbE Multifunction Driver netxtreme2-4.8.22-2.src.rpm (or earlier).
  • Server blade is running Linux.
  • NC532i or NC532m is connected to an HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module for BladeSystem c-Class.

When this occurs, a message similar to the following may be displayed on the screen:

SCOPE

Any HP BladeSystem c-Class c7000 Enclosure or HP BladeSystem c-Class c3000 Enclosure with a server blade configured as follows:

  • Server blade is configured with an HP NC532i Dual Port 10GbE Multifunction BL-c Adapter or HP NC532m Dual Port 10GbE Multifunction BL-c Adapter.
    Note: This loss of connectivity has not been reported with other network server adapters configured as described in the description section.
  • Server blade is running the HP NC-Series Broadcom 1Gb and 10GbE Multifunction Driver netxtreme2-4.8.22-2.src.rpm (or earlier).
  • Server blade is running Linux.
  • NC532i or NC532m is connected to an HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module for BladeSystem c-Class.
    Note: This does not occur when the NC532i or NC532m is connected to an Ethernet Interconnect, a Fibre Channel Interconnect, or any other Virtual Connect Interconnect (besides the HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10GB Ethernet Module).

RESOLUTION

This will be resolved in the HP NC-Series Broadcom 1Gb and 10GbE Multifunction Driver netxtreme2-5.0.17-1.src.rpm, targeted 4Q, 2009. This advisory will be updated soon when additional information is available.

As a workaround, to ensure the server blades do not lose network connectivity, disable the Transparent Packet Aggregation (TPA) in the driver with the module option of "disable_tpa=1" by adding the following line to the modprobe.conf file:

options bnx2x disable_tpa=1


The Transparent Packet Aggregation (TPA) feature reduces certain network processing overhead. When TPA is disabled, some network processing offload features may not occur.
