Setting Up the Printer for a Wired or Wireless Network in Windows 7 for the HP Deskjet 6840 and 6980 Printer series, and Officejet Pro K550dtwn Printer
The drivers for your HP product are already included in the new Windows 7 operating system! You do not need to download drivers to use the product . The Windows 7 operating system on your computer contains a basic driver solution that you can use to install your product on a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network.
NOTE: With a network installation of the basic Windows 7 driver, the buttons on the product do not function, and some of the advanced product features are not available. However, you can still print from a software program over the network.
Wired network installation : Follow only the instructions in "Step one for wired and wireless networks."
Wireless network installation : Follow the instructions in "Step one for wired and wireless networks" to complete a wired network installation. Then, continue to "Step two for wireless networks only" to switch from the wired network to a wireless network.
Step one for wired and wireless networks: Install the printer
Your basic Windows 7 driver is now installed for a wired network connection. If you need a wireless installation, continue to the next step. Otherwise, you can review the Frequently asked questions below.
Step two for wireless networks only: Switch from Wired network to Wireless network
Make sure that you first complete "Step one for wired and wireless networks: Install the printer." Then follow these steps to print a network configuration page and use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to switch the connection from wired to wireless.
Use the Network Diagnostic Utility
The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free tool to diagnose and resolve printing problems and to gather network information. To look up your network name and password, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor ( ) on a computer that has an active wireless connection to the network that you want to connect the printer to.
When you click the link, the HP Print and Scan Doctor downloads using your Internet browser's download capabilities. After the tool opens, follow these steps to view your network settings.
