HP Photosmart C4700 All-in-One Series Printers - Copying from the Printer Control Panel Is Slow

Issue

When you press the Copy button on the product control panel, the product copies very slowly, even when you select Fast mode.

NOTE: The complexity of the original document determines the speed at which the product makes a copy. The more complex the original document, the longer the product takes to make a copy.

Solution one: Reset the product

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Reset the product

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Copy a document and time the results

Follow these steps to make sure that you have resolved the issue.

How to copy a document and time the results

  1. Find a document that is printed on plain white paper and contains a mix of text and graphics.

  2. Load the paper tray with plain white paper.

  3. Load the document onto the scanner glass.

  4. Press the button () next to Copy on the control panel.

  5. Press the button () next to Copy Color on the control panel.

  6. Make the following adjustments on the Copy Menu on the control panel:

    • Set the Copy Speed to Fast.

    • Set the Paper Size to A4 Plain or 8.5 x 11 Plain. (Match the size of the paper you loaded in the tray.)

    • Set Reduce/Enlarge to Actual size.

    • Set the number of copies to 1.

  7. Do the following two things simultaneously:

    1. Press OK on the control panel to begin copying the document.

    2. Begin timing the copying process.

  8. Stop timing the copying process when the printed page falls into the paper tray.

  9. Note the amount of time the copying process takes.

    • If the copying process takes less than 45 seconds, the product is copying at its specified speed, and you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the copying process takes longer than 45 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Plug the product directly into a wall outlet

Follow these instructions to make sure that the product is properly connected to a suitable power source.

Step one: Plug the product into a wall outlet

  1. Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.

  2. Plug the power cord directly into a grounded (three-prong) wall outlet.

  1. Find a document that is printed on plain white paper and contains a mix of text and graphics.

  2. Load the paper tray with plain white paper.

  3. Load the document onto the scanner glass.

Solution three: Clean the cartridges

Follow these steps in the order presented to clean the cartridges

Step one: Clean the cartridges

CAUTION: Clean cartridges only when necessary. Unnecessary cleaning wastes ink and shortens the life of the cartridge.
  1. Gather the following materials:

    • Distilled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridge)

    • Cotton swabs or other soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the electrical contacts

    • A clean sheet of paper

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  5. Press down on the first cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you out of the slot.

    CAUTION: Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.
  6. Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.

  7. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then clean only the copper-colored contacts.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the ink nozzles. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  8. Allow the cartridge to dry for at least 10 minutes.

  9. After 10 minutes, hold the cartridge so the HP logo is on top.

  10. Insert the cartridge back into the carriage slot. Push the cartridge firmly into the slot until it snaps into place.

    NOTE: Make sure that you push the cartridge in until it snaps into place. The product will not operate properly if the cartridges are not correctly installed.
  11. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge.

  12. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  13. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
