Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless Network for the HP Photosmart eStation (C510) All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.

NOTE: If you have not already set up your printer, click here for instructions to set up the printer hardware , and then return to this document to set up your printer on a wireless network.

Windows XP

Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network.

  1. Gather the following items:

    • Network name: The network name is the SSID

    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)

    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network

    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL

      NOTE: Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure

  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.

  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.

  4. Optional: If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.

    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.

    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.

    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network with the Wireless Setup Wizard

Follow these steps to connect the product to your wireless WLAN 802.11 network.

  1. Touch Home () on the top left side of the product control panel. The Home menu displays.

  2. Touch Menu (). A list of menu options displays.

  3. Touch Settings. The Settings menu displays.

  4. Touch Wireless. The Wireless Setup Wizard searches for networks, and then displays them in a list.

  5. Touch the name of your wireless network (SSID) from the list.

    If your wireless home network’s name (SSID) is not shown in the list of available networks, your network router might not be broadcasting the network name. If your network router has been configured to not broadcast the network name (SSID), please enable SSID broadcasting on your router. The Zeen requires the network name (SSID) to be broadcasted in order to connect or maintain a connection with your wireless home network.

  6. After you have selected your network, the HP product prompts you to enter your wireless security code. Touch the text entry box. The touch keyboard displays on the control panel screen.

  7. Use the touch keyboard to enter your wireless security code.

  8. When you finish entering your security code, touch Done, and then touch Connect to confirm.

    The product attempts to connect to the network.

  9. Make sure the product successfully connects to the network before continuing to the next step.
    NOTE: If a connection error message displays, make sure that the network name and security key are correct, and then follow the prompts to enter the information again.
  10. Once the Zeen (detachable control panel) is connected to your wireless network, use the following steps to sync the printer to the Zeen network.

    1. From the Settings menu on the product control panel, touch Wireless. The Wireless menu displays.

    2. From the Wireless menu, use your finger to scroll through the menu options, and then touch Sync Networks.

      NOTE: When prompted, dock the Zeen onto the printer if it is not already docked.

Step three: Download and install the printer software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions to download and install the software. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.

NOTE: As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads .

  4. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:

    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.

    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.

      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.

    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.

  5. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  6. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.

  7. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.

  8. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Windows Vista

Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the router, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.

  1. Gather the following items:

    • Network name: The network name is the SSID

    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)

    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network

    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL

      NOTE: Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure

    4. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Mac OS X

Follow these steps for the Mac OS X operating system. Next, choose your connection type.

Option one: Wireless installation

If you have not previously installed the software, follow these instructions.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:

    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).

    • WEP key or WPA security passphrase

    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network.

    • Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.

    • Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.

    • A USB cable (used only during installation).

    • Administrator privileges or password

  2. Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.

  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.

  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network with the Wireless Setup Wizard

Follow these steps to connect the product to your wireless WLAN 802.11 network.

  1. Touch Home () on the top left side of the product control panel. The Home menu displays.

  2. Touch Menu (). A list of menu options displays.

  3. Touch Settings. The Settings menu displays.

  4. Touch Wireless. The Wireless Setup Wizard searches for networks, and then displays them in a list.

  5. Touch the name of your wireless network (SSID) from the list.

  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads .

  4. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:

    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.

    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.

      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.

    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.

  5. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  6. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.

  7. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.

  8. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Option two: Change connection type

If you want to change your existing connection to a wireless network, follow these instructions.

  1. Open HP Device Manager.

  2. From the Information and Settings drop-down menu, click Setup Assistant.

    The HP Setup Assistant window opens.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to change your connection type to an existing wireless network.
