HP ProBook 4520s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 4520s Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers

Parts required

NOTE: Part numbers are subject to change.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    CAUTION: Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
    NOTE: The video shown depicts a different model of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to this notebook.
  2. Remove the battery and switch cover.

  3. Remove the two 6 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the top cover.

  4. Slide the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook to release the retaining tabs.

  5. Flip the keyboard toward the front of the notebook and rest it face down on the palm rest.

  6. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Place the keyboard face down on the palm rest.

  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board.
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to secure the keyboard cable in the ZIF connector.

  4. Flip the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook and align the retaining tabs on the front of the keyboard with the slots on the base enclosure.

  5. While pressing down on the front and rear edges, slide the keyboard forward until it is securely seated under the lip of the palm rest.

  6. Replace the two 6 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the top cover.

  7. Replace the battery and switch cover.
