Setting Up the Printer for a Wired or Wireless Network for the HP LaserJet Pro CP1525n and CP1525nw Color Printers

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your HP product to use it on a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point (infrastructure network). This document also explains how to change your product from a USB install to a network install.

NOTE: If you have more than one computer on the network, install the product software on each computer that you plan to share with the HP product.

Windows XP

Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system. Next, choose your connection type.

Wired (Ethernet) network

Follow these steps to install your HP product over a wired (Ethernet) network.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Check requirements

Before installing the driver, make sure that you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.

  1. Make sure that you have an Ethernet network router, switch, or hub, or a wireless network router that has available Ethernet ports.

  2. Connect your computer to the router, switch, or hub, if it is not already connected.

  3. Obtain an Ethernet cable. Do not use a standard telephone cable.

  • A network that uses one or more of the following protocols:
    • TCP/IP (IPv4 or IPv6)

    • Port 9100

    • LPR

    • DHCP

    • AutoIP

    • SNMP

    • Bonjour

    • SLP

    • WSD

    • NBNS

    • LLMNR

Step two: Change from USB connection to Ethernet connection

If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

  • I have already installed my HP product with a USB connection and want to switch to an Ethernet connection.

    1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start (), and then click Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes folder opens.

    2. Find the icon for your HP product (), and then right-click it.

    3. Click Delete to remove the product.

    4. Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.

  • I have not already installed my HP product with a USB connection.

    Continue to the next step to connect the HP product to the network.

Step three: Connect the HP printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect the product to the wired network.

  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the back of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the product. Then connect the other end of the cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.

  3. Wait 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name for the product.

  4. On the product control panel, press OK.

  5. Print a Configuration Report.

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.

  6. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

Step four: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

CD
Download
For a new product:
CD installation is a quick and easy method.
If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:
CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.
Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:
The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.
The software that you can download from the HP Web site is the most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.

Step five: Install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions for the installation method that you want to use (CD or download). During the installation, choose the option for the network type of connection, not the USB option.

Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.

Method one: Download and install the software from the HP Web site

Follow these steps to download and install the software.

NOTE: Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is required for the installer to run. If Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed you will be prompted to install it. If you choose not to install it, only the basic print driver is installed.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Method two: Install the software with the product CD

Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.

NOTE: Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is required for the installer to run. If Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed you are prompted to install it. If you choose not to install it, only the basic print driver is installed.
  1. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.

    If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:

    Click Start (), click My Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

    NOTE: If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.

  3. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.

    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as HP Toolbox and Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.

    • Minimum: Click Click here for more install options to install the minimum software. The minimum software contains only the print driver. Install the minimum software if the computer is low on hard disk space.

  4. When prompted to select a connection type, select the Network type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)

  5. Click Next.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

Wireless network (CP1525nw model only)

If you have a wireless-capable HP product and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

You must have the following items before you install the HP product on the wireless network:

Do not worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor can help you gather some of these items.

  • Network name: The network name is the SSID

  • WEP key or WPA security passphrase

  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network

  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL

    NOTE: Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure

  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now

Use an automated tool to help gather information

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor () to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

Locate your network login information.

  1. On the Menu bar in the Print and Scan Doctor window, click Help.

  2. Click Show Advanced Info.

  3. Click Show Wireless Info.

  4. Under the Wireless Settings pane, identify the name of your network under SSID, and then identify the Network Key next to it in the list.

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.

  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.

  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP product.

  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

    • I have already installed my HP product with a USB connection and want to switch to a wireless connection.

      1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start (), and then click Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes folder opens.

      2. Find the icon for your HP product (), and then right-click it.

      3. Click Delete to remove the product.

      4. Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.

    • I have not already installed my HP product with a USB connection.

      Continue to the next step to connect the HP product to the network.

Step three: Connect to the wireless network

Use one of the following methods to connect to the wireless network.

Method one: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using WPS.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.

NOTE: This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.

  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.

    NOTE: If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using the product control panel, or the USB cable connection method.
Method two: Standard connection using the control panel

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), use one of the following options to connect the product to your wireless network.

Option one: Push button
  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, follow these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Pushbutton, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Option two: PIN
  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, complete these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select PIN. The product generates a unique PIN.

  4. Type the unique PIN into the wireless router's setup screen, and then click Save or Apply.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Method three: Standard connection using a USB cable

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), you can use this method to set up the product on a wireless network. Using a USB cable to transfer settings makes setting up a wireless connection easier. After the setup is complete, disconnect the USB cable.

  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, select the Connect through a wireless network option.

  3. Connect the USB cable () to the product and the computer when prompted.

    CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable until the installation program prompts you.
  4. When the installation is complete, print a Configuration Report to make sure that the product has an SSID name. Follow these steps to print a configuration report:

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. On the product control panel, press OK, and then press OK again to select Reports.

    3. Press the Right Arrow button ( ) to scroll to and select Config Report.

  5. When the Configuration Report prints, disconnect the USB cable () from the product.

    You have completed the software installation. Do not perform any more steps in this document.

Step four: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD! You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

  • Install the software with the printer CD

    For a new printer:
    CD installation is a quick and easy method.
    For an older printer:
    CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.
    For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Vista.
    About the software:
    The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.
  • Download and install the software from the HP website

    For a new printer:
    If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
    For an older printer:
    Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
    Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
    About the software:
    The software you can download from the HP website is most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers after the printer and CD release to the market.

Step five: Install the product software

To install the product on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the product wirelessly over the same network.

Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation will fail.

Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website

Follow these steps to download and install the software.

NOTE: Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is required for the installer to run. If Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed you will be prompted to install it. If you choose not to install it, only the basic print driver is installed.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

Windows Vista

Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system. Next, choose your connection type.

Wired (Ethernet) network

If you want to install your HP product over a wired (Ethernet) network, follow these steps.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Method two: Install the software with the product CD

  1. Press the Power switch or button to turn on the product.

  2. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to begin.

    If the installer does not begin automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

    NOTE: If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.

  4. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.

    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as HP Toolbox and Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.

    • Minimum: Click Click here for more install options to install the minimum software. The minimum software contains only the print driver. Install the minimum software if the computer is low on hard disk space.

  5. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Network type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)

  6. Click Next.

    Important: At this point, the installer searches, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

    NOTE: If you have previously installed the software and are changing the connection type from USB to Ethernet, click Add a device when the Uninstall the software or Add a device window opens.

    Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.

Wireless network (CP1525nw model only)

If you have a wireless-capable HP product and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

Method one: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using WPS.

The following video demonstrates how to use Wi-Fi Protected Setup to connect your printer to a wireless network.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.

NOTE: This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.

  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.

    NOTE: If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using the product control panel, or the USB cable connection method.
Method two: Standard connection using the control panel

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), use one of the following options to connect the product to your wireless network.

Option one: Push button

  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, follow these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Pushbutton, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Option two: PIN
  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, complete these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select PIN. The product generates a unique PIN.

  4. Type the unique PIN into the wireless router's setup screen, and then click Save or Apply.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Method three: Standard connection using a USB cable

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), you can use this method to set up the product on a wireless network. Using a USB cable to transfer settings makes setting up a wireless connection easier. After the setup is complete, disconnect the USB cable.

  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, select the Connect through a wireless network option.

  3. Connect the USB cable () to the product and the computer when prompted.

    CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable until the installation program prompts you.
  4. When the installation is complete, print a Configuration Report to make sure that the product has an SSID name. Follow these steps to print a configuration report:

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. On the product control panel, press OK, and then press OK again to select Reports.

    3. Press the Right Arrow button ( ) to scroll to and select Config Report.

  5. When the Configuration Report prints, disconnect the USB cable () from the product.

    You have completed the software installation. Do not perform any more steps in this document.

Step four: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD! You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

  • Install the software with the printer CD

    For a new printer:
    CD installation is a quick and easy method.
    For an older printer:
    CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.
    For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your printer prior to that year, the CD that came with the printer might not work correctly on a computer running Vista.
    About the software:
    The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release.
  • Download and install the software from the HP website

    For a new printer:
    If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
    For an older printer:
    Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
    Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP printer released.
    About the software:
    The software you can download from the HP website is most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers after the printer and CD release to the market.

Step five: Install the product software

To install the product on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the product wirelessly over the same network.

Important: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation will fail.

Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website

Follow these steps to download and install the software.

NOTE: Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is required for the installer to run. If Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed you will be prompted to install it. If you choose not to install it, only the basic print driver is installed.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Method two: Install the software with the product CD

Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.

NOTE: Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is required for the installer to run. If Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed you are prompted to install it. If you choose not to install it, only the basic print driver is installed.
  1. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.

    If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:

    Click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

    NOTE: If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.

  3. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.

    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as HP ToolboxFX and Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.

    • Minimum: Click Click here for more install options to install the minimum software. The minimum software contains only the print driver. Install the minimum software if the computer is low on hard disk space.

  4. When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Network type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)

  5. Click Next.

    IMPORTANT: At this point, the installer searches, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next again to continue with the installation.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

Windows 7

Follow these steps for the Windows 7 operating system. Next, choose your connection type.

Wired (Ethernet) network

Follow these steps to install your HP product over a wired (Ethernet) network.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Check requirements

Before installing the driver, make sure that you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.

  1. Make sure that you have an Ethernet network router, switch, or hub, or a wireless network router that has available Ethernet ports.

  2. Connect your computer to the router, switch, or hub, if it is not already connected.

  3. Obtain an Ethernet cable. Do not use a standard telephone cable.

  • A network that uses one or more of the following protocols:
    • TCP/IP (IPv4 or IPv6)

    • Port 9100

    • LPR

    • DHCP

    • AutoIP

    • SNMP

    • Bonjour

    • SLP

    • WSD

    • NBNS

    • LLMNR

Step two: Change from USB connection to Ethernet connection

If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

  • I have already installed my HP product with a USB connection and want to switch to an Ethernet connection.

    1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel opens.

    2. In the Control Panel, click Devices and Printers.

    3. Find the icon for your HP product (), and then right-click it.

    4. Click Delete to remove the product.

    5. Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.

  • I have not already installed my HP product with a USB connection.

    Continue to the next step to connect the HP product to the network.

Step three: Connect the HP printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect the product to the wired network.

  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the back of the product.

  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the product. Then connect the other end of the cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.

  3. Wait 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name for the product.

  4. On the product control panel, press OK.

  5. Print a Configuration Report.

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.

  6. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

Step four: Decide whether to install with the product CD or download the software

Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

CD
Download
For a new product:
CD installation is a quick and easy method.
If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:
CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.
Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:
The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.

Step five: Install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions for the installation method that you want to use (CD or download). During the installation, choose the option for the network type of connection, not the USB option.

IMPORTANT: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock, accept, continue, yes, allow, or permit, or the installation fails.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.

  4. In the Software to Install window, you can choose to install the recommended software or the minimum software.

    • Recommended: Click Next to install the recommended software. The recommended software provides full product functionality and includes valuable software, such as HP Toolbox and Help and Learn Center. HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

    NOTE: If you have previously installed the software and are changing the connection type from USB to Ethernet, click Add a device when the Uninstall the software or Add a device window opens.

    Important: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.

Wireless network (CP1525 model only)

If you have a wireless-capable HP product and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.

Important: You must follow these steps in the order presented.

Step one: Gather the required network setup items

You must have the following items before you install the HP product on the wireless network:

Do not worry if you do not have all of the items yet! The HP Print and Scan Doctor can help you gather some of these items.

  • Network name: The network name is the SSID

  • WEP key or WPA security passphrase

  • A computer that is connected to the wireless network

  • Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL

    NOTE: Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services or get product updates.
  • Your wireless-capable HP printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure

  • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now

Use an automated tool to help gather information

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor () to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

Locate your network login information.

  1. On the Menu bar in the Print and Scan Doctor window, click Help.

  2. Click Show Advanced Info.

  3. Click Show Wireless Info.

  4. Under the Wireless Settings pane, identify the name of your network under SSID, and then identify the Network Key next to it in the list.

Step two: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.

  2. Exit all applications running on your computer.

  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP product.

  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.

    • I have already installed my HP product with a USB connection and want to switch to a wireless connection.

Follow these steps to install the printer in the Windows 8 operating system. First, choose your connection type.

Wired (Ethernet) network

Follow these steps to install your printer over a wired (Ethernet) network.

Step two: Change from a USB or wireless connection to an Ethernet connection (optional)

If you previously installed the software for a USB or wireless connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to reconfigure the USB or wireless installation before continuing.

  1. Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Search.

  2. Click or tap Settings, and then type Devices in the Search box.

  3. Click or tap Devices and printers.

  4. Click Reconfigure your HP device.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reconfigure your printer's installation.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the Ethernet network.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port () on the rear of the printer.

  3. Connect the Ethernet cable to the printer port, and then connect the other end of the cable to an available port on the network router, switch, or hub.

Step four: Download and install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow these steps to download and install the software. During the installation, choose the option to Connect through a Wired Network.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Wireless network

If you have a wireless-capable printer and want to install it on a wireless network, follow these steps.

Step one: Prepare for installation

Follow these steps to prepare the printer for installation on the wireless network.

  1. Make sure that the printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.

  2. Close all applications running on your computer.

  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.

  4. If you previously installed the software for a USB or wired (Ethernet) connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to reconfigure the USB or Ethernet installation before continuing.

    • I have already installed my printer with a USB or Ethernet connection and want to switch to a wireless connection.

      1. Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Search.

      2. Click or tap Settings, and then type Devices in the Search box.

      3. Click or tap Devices and printers.

      4. Click Reconfigure your HP device.

      5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reconfigure your printer's installation.

    • I have not already installed my printer with a USB or Ethernet connection.

      Continue to the next step to decide which method to use to install the software and connect the printer to the wireless network.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

Use one of the following methods to connect to the wireless network.

Method one: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using WPS.

If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the product on a wireless network.

NOTE: This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the product.
  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.

  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.

    NOTE: If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try using the product control panel, or the USB cable connection method.
Method two: Standard connection using the control panel

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), use one of the following options to connect the product to your wireless network.

Option one: Push button

  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, follow these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Pushbutton, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Option two: PIN
  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, complete these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select PIN. The product generates a unique PIN.

  4. Type the unique PIN into the wireless router's setup screen, and then click Save or Apply.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Method three: Standard connection using a USB cable

If your wireless router does not support WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS), you can use this method to set up the product on a wireless network. Using a USB cable to transfer settings makes setting up a wireless connection easier. After the setup is complete, disconnect the USB cable.

  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, select the Connect through a wireless network option.

  3. Connect the USB cable () to the product and the computer when prompted.

    CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable until the installation program prompts you.
  4. When the installation is complete, print a Configuration Report to make sure that the product has an SSID name. Follow these steps to print a configuration report:

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. On the product control panel, press OK, and then press OK again to select Reports.

    3. Press the Right Arrow button ( ) to scroll to and select Config Report.

  5. When the Configuration Report prints, disconnect the USB cable () from the product.

    You have completed the software installation. Do not perform any more steps in this document.

Step three: Download and install the printer software

Follow these steps to download and install the printer software. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

Wired (Ethernet) network

Follow these steps to install your HP product on a wired (Ethernet) network.

Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6

Follow these steps for Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Step one: Check requirements

Before installing the driver, make sure that you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.

  1. Make sure that you have an Ethernet network router, switch, or hub, or a wireless network router that has available Ethernet ports.

  2. Connect your computer to the router, switch, or hub, if it is not already connected.

  3. Obtain an Ethernet cable. Do not use a standard telephone cable.

  5. Print a Configuration Report.

    1. Load plain white paper into tray 1.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Reports, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK.

  6. Make note of the product IP address on the Configuration Report for future reference.

The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.

HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.

Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

  • You no longer have the product software CD

  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released

Should I download and install the software with Apple Software Updates?

Apple Software Updates is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac.

You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Updates. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.

NOTE: If your product supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before installing Snow Leopard. Depending on your product driver update, use Preview, Image Capture, or the Scan icon from the print queue to scan.

Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

  • You no longer have the product software CD

  • The updated full-feature HP software is not immediately available on the HP Software and Drivers page after the public release of a new operating system

  • You updated your operating system to a new version that released after your HP product released

Should I install using the software CD?

Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.

Important: If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work. Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.

Step four: Install the software

To install the HP product on the network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product over the same network.

Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences. The System Preferences window opens.

  2. Click Print & Fax. The Print & Fax window opens.

  3. Click the plus sign (). The name of your product displays.

  4. Select your HP product, and then click Add.

  5. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the product to the queue.

  6. After the installation process completes, verify that your product displays in the queue.

    NOTE: If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your HP product, and then click Add.
Method three: Install the software with the software CD

  1. Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer.

  2. Double-click the HP software disc icon that displays under the Macintosh HD icon.

  3. Double-click the HP Installer icon.

    The HP Installer program opens.

  4. When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

OS X 10.7 (Lion)

Follow these steps for the Lion operating system.

Step one: Check requirements

Before installing the driver, make sure that you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.

NOTE: Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences. The System Preferences window opens.

  2. Click Print & Scan. The Print & Scan window opens.

  3. Click the plus sign (). The name of your printer displays.

  4. Click Add Printer or Scanner.

  5. Select your printer, and then click Add.

  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.

  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.

    NOTE: If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your printer, and then click Add.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Follow these steps to install the printer software on a Wired (Ethernet) network.

  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.

  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.

  2. Click Print & Fax.

  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your product, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.

  4. Click the plus sign ().

  5. Select your product from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.

OS X 10.7 (Lion)

Follow these steps for OS X 10.7 (Lion).

NOTE: To install the product software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP Web site or from Apple Software Updates. The product CD is not supported in Lion.
  • If you have not already installed your product, follow the steps in 'Option one: Wireless installation'.

  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.

Can I install the software if the printer is already connected to the network?

Adding a network-connected printer to the queue is a quick and easy software download method using Apple Software Updates.

You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Updates. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.

HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

  • Your wireless network uses a router that does not support WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)

  • The updated full-feature HP software is not immediately available on the HP Software and Drivers page after the public release of a new operating system

  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released

Should I download and install the software with Apple Software Updates?

Important: You must have a router that supports WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) to install the software with Apple Software Updates. If you do not have a WPS router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.

Apple Software Update is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac OS operating system.

You do not need to download a driver from HP Software & Driver Downloads if you install using Apple Software Update. This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.

NOTE: If your printer supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before upgrading your operating system. Depending on your printer driver update, you can use Preview, Image Capture, or the Scan icon from the print queue to scan.

Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

  • You no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer

  • The updated full-feature HP software for the new version of Mac OS is not immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page

  • You updated Mac OS to a new version that released after your printer released

  • You are doing a first time install of a new version Mac OS on a new Mac

  • You already installed HP software on a Mac running an earlier version of Mac OS and have updated to a new version of Mac OS

Step three: Download and install the software

The software CD that shipped with your product is not supported in Lion. Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product over the same network.

NOTE: Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website

Follow these steps to download and install the software from the HP website. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product wirelessly over the same network.

NOTE: Updated full-feature HP software might not be immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page after the public release of a new operating system. A release delay might be required for full testing and quality assurance of the final version of the operating system. If the software is not available, you can download the latest software using Apple Software Updates or by adding a network-connected product to the queue.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Method two: Add the network-connected printer to the queue

Important: The product must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.

  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.

  2. Click Print & Scan.

  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your product, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.

  4. Click the plus sign ().

  5. Select your product from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.

  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the product to the queue.

  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your product displays in the queue.

    NOTE: If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your HP product, and then click Add.
Method three: Download and install the software using Apple Software Updates
NOTE: You must have a WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)-enabled router to connect the product to the wireless network. If you do not have this type of router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Step one: Connect to the wireless network using WiFi Protected Setup

Follow these steps to connect your printer to the wireless network using WPS.

  1. Press the WPS button on your wireless router.

  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless button () for two seconds. Release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.

  3. Wait up to two minutes while the product establishes a network connection with the wireless router.

Step two: Install the software

Follow these steps to download the current software from Apple Software Updates.

NOTE: Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences. The System Preferences window opens.

  2. Click Print & Scan. The Print & Scan window opens.

  3. Click the plus sign (). The name of your printer displays.

  4. Click Add Printer or Scanner.

  5. Select your printer, and then click Add.

  6. Click Install, and then click Agree on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.

  7. After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.

    NOTE: If the product was not added to the queue, Click the plus sign (), select your printer, and then click Add.
Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection

Follow these steps to change an existing connection type to a wireless connection using Bonjour.

NOTE: The product software must be installed, and the product must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour.
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.

  2. Click Print & Scan.

  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your product, and then click the minus sign () to remove it.

  4. Click the plus sign ().

  5. Select your product from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Follow these steps to install the printer software on a wireless network.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:

    • Your network is already set up: Before you can install the printer, you must set up your wireless network. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.

    • Obtain the network name and password: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The WEP key or WPA security passphrase are other names for the password.

      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access: Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.

  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.

  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.

  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:

    • You previously installed the printer for a USB connection and now want to switch to a wireless network connection:

      1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock.

        NOTE: HP Utility is also located in Applications/Hewlett-Packard folder.
      2. Click Applications, and then double-click HP Setup Assistant.

      3. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection.
    • You did not previously install your printer for a USB connection:

      Continue to the next step to proceed with the installation.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network

Use one of the following options to connect the product to your wireless network.

Option one: Push button

  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, follow these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Pushbutton, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the wireless network.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Option two: PIN
  1. On the control panel, press the Wireless button (). Look at the control panel display to see if the Wireless Menu item has opened. If the Wireless Menu has not opened, complete these steps:

    1. On the product control panel, press OK.

    2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.

    3. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Right arrow button () to select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Right arrow button () to select PIN. The product generates a unique PIN.

  4. Type the unique PIN into the wireless router's setup screen, and then click Save or Apply.

    NOTE: Establishing the wireless connection can take a few minutes.
Step three: Install the software
NOTE: To install the printer software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website. The printer CD is not supported in Mountain Lion, and Apple Software Update does not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads .

  4. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.

    The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.

  5. Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.

  6. Click Driver - Product Installation Software, and then click Download.

  7. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.

  9. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
