Introduction

When full software functionality is not available through the product driver, use the Windows Fax and Scan feature available in Windows 7 when your device is connected via USB. For information about scanning over a network, see the section About network scanning .

Some older LaserJet products have print-only software support with no scan software in Windows 7. If you have one of the following products, use Windows Update or Devices and Printers in Windows 7 to obtain the HP driver and enable the print-only software, and then use either the Windows Fax and Scan feature, the product control panel, or the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to fax and scan.

About network scanning

The Scan feature in Windows 7 is only available with these products when they are directly connected to the computer or device via a USB connection. For more information about supported connection types, see the Recommended driver section.

About the Universal Print Driver (UPD) and scanning

The Universal Print Driver (UPD) is widely available and can make upgrading your product software a simple, straightforward process for one or multiple printers. However, the UPD is not recommended for HP LaserJet All-in-Ones (listed above).

If you inadvertently installed a UPD with one of these printers, go to Unable to scan after upgrading to Windows 7 (c03056313) (in English).

If you have not yet installed the driver for your product, use Microsoft Windows Update to install the driver included with the Windows 7 operating system, or see the Recommended driver section for more information.

Recommended drivers

Some products have a workaround that uses the Vista full solution in compatibility mode via a USB or network connection. This workaround only works with a 32-bit system. For 64-bit systems, the only solution is the print-only driver available in Devices and Printers with Windows Update using a USB connection (no network install or scan support).

NOTE: While most LaserJet printers support network scanning, the following printers do NOT support scanning via a network, do NOT support the Scan to PDF feature, and do not support utilities such as HP Solution Center in Windows 7.

Footnotes
1
Windows Update automatically installs the driver when the computer has an internet connection. If the company restricts access to the internet or Windows Update, contact the system administrator.
2
This printer is fully supported in 32-bit only using the recommended workaround which provides print, fax, and scan software using the Vista full solution in compatibility mode. Customers running 64-bit must use Windows Update to obtain print-only software, and then use the Windows Fax & Scan application.
3
To install the driver, connect the printer to the computer using a supported connection type. Some printers do not support network or wireless installs. For these printers, use a USB connection.
4
To scan, connect the printer to the computer using a supported connection type. Some printers do not support wireless scanning or scanning over a network. For these printers, use a USB connection.
5
Internet connection required. If internet access is not available, use the In-OS driver included in the Windows 7 operating system (found in Devices and Printers). The In-OS driver will enable print functionality via a USB connection only.
