DESCRIPTION

When capping power on a ProLiant server, HP Integrated Lights-Out 3 (iLO 3) uses a guardband to protect against any errors in measurement of the power. If the Power Cap is within the predicted margin of error of an unachievable cap, iLO 3 may correctly report the cap as unachievable. However, the Power Meter page will incorrectly indicate that the cap is being met.

When this occurs, the following error messages may be displayed in the Integrated Management Log (IML):

Maintenance note: CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap

OR

Maintenance note: Power cap cannot be reached with current server configuration

The Power Settings page may also display the message, "The present power cap value is unreachable with the current server configuration."

This issue occurs when the Power Cap is within the margin of error of measurement of what is an achievable cap given the current server configuration.

This issue can be observed in the following scenario:

  1. Log into the iLO 3 GUI.
  2. Open an IRC Session.
  3. Select the Power Settings page and set a manual cap below 50 percent of the difference
between maximum and minimum power, but above 20 percent.
  4. Wait for 10 minutes. The Power Settings Page will report "The present power
cap is unreachable with the current server configuration."
  5. Select the Power Meter page, and note that the graph displays a successful cap, and the
Average and Peaks are under the black cap line.
  6. Select the Integrated Management Log and note the message, "Maintenance Note:
Power Cap cannot be reached with current server configuration"
and "Maintenance Note: CPU(S) operating at reduced performance due to a low
    power cap."

SCOPE

Any ProLiant server configured with HP Integrated Lights-Out 3 (iLO 3) Firmware Version 1.15.

RESOLUTION

A future version of iLO firmware will correct this issue.

As a workaround, lower power usage on the server or increase the power cap until it is outside this margin of error. If the margin seems particularly large, reboot the server to allow for calibration to occur.

This advisory will be updated when additional information becomes available.
