The lights on the front of the printer indicate the printer status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the printer. Blinking lights can indicate error conditions. They might also indicate that the printer is starting up, processing a print job, or charging batteries.

The following sections describe the most common issues related to the light patterns on your printer. Find the issue related to the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: The Power light is blinking

The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    The printer is turning on or off, or it is waiting for ink to dry.

Solution

No action is required. The printer is turning on or off, or it is holding a document until the ink dries.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Resume light is on

The Power light is on and the resume light is on. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: On

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The front access cover is open.

Solution

Close the front access cover.

Issue: The Power light is off and the Resume light is on

The Power light is off, and the Resume light is on. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: On

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    An unsupported USB hub is connected to the printer.

Solution

If an unsupported USB hub is connected to the printer, remove it, and then try printing again.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Bluetooth light is on

The Power light and the Bluetooth light are on. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: On

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The Bluetooth wireless connection is turned on.

Solution

No action is required. The Bluetooth connection is turned on.

Issue: The Battery Status light is green

The Battery Status light is green. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Green

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is 41 to 100% charged.

Solution

No action is required. The battery is 41 to 100% charged, and the printer is turned on and idle.

Issue: The Battery Status light is amber

The Battery Status light is amber. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Amber

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is 10 to 41% charged.

Solution

When the Battery Status light turns amber, recharge the battery.

Plug the power cord into a power source or wall outlet to charge the battery.

Issue: The Battery Status light is red

The Battery Status light is red. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Red

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is less than 10% charged.

Solution

When the Battery Status light turns red, recharge the battery.

Plug the power cord into a power source or wall outlet to charge the battery.

Issue: The Battery Status light is blinking and red

The Battery Status light is blinking and red. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Blinking and red

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is less than 2% charged.

Solution

When the Battery Status light is blinking and red, recharge the battery immediately.

Plug the power cord into a power source or wall outlet to charge the battery.

Issue: The Battery Status light is on and the Battery Charging light is on

The Battery Status light and the Battery Charging light are both on. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: On

  • Battery Charging light: On

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is charging.

Solution

No action is required. The battery is charging.

NOTE: The color of the Battery Status light indicates the charge level. When the battery is fully charged, the Battery Charging light turns off.

Issue: The Battery Charging light is red

The Battery Charging light is red. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Red

  • Left Cartridge light: Off

  • Right Cartridge light: Off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The battery is faulty.

Solution

Replace the battery.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Left or the Right Cartridge light is on

The Power light is on and the Left or the Right Cartridge light is on. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: On or off

  • Right Cartridge light: On or off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The indicated cartridge is low on ink.

Solution

Follow these steps to replace the low cartridge.

NOTE: You can continue to print when the Left or the Right Cartridge light is on. You do not need to replace the cartridges until print quality is unsatisfactory.

Step one: Replace the low cartridge

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the front access cover. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

  3. Lift the cartridge latch, and then gently remove the cartridge from the carriage.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then pull the pink tab to remove the protective tape.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper contacts on the back of the cartridge or the ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge. Touching the contacts or the nozzles might damage the cartridge.

  5. Insert the cartridge at a slight angle into the carriage slot.

    NOTE: Place the tri-color cartridge in the left slot, and the black or photo cartridge in the right slot.

  6. Close the cartridge latch. Press the latch down to make sure that it rests flat on the cartridge.

  7. Close the front access cover, and then allow the cartridge initialization process to complete before proceeding.

Step two: Align the cartridges

Whenever you install a new cartridge, align the cartridges for the best possible print quality.

NOTE: Make sure to load unused, plain, white paper into the paper tray before you align the ink cartridges. An alignment page prints during the alignment process.

Select your operating system, and then follow the instructions to align the cartridges.

  • Windows XP

    1. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click HP Officejet 100 (L411) Mobile Printer Series, and then click Toolbox. The Toolbox opens.

    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

  • Windows Vista

    1. Click the Windows icon (), click Programs, click HP, click HP Officejet 100 (L411) Mobile Printer Series, and then click Toolbox. The Toolbox opens.

    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

  • Windows 7

    1. Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click HP Officejet 100 (L411) Mobile Printer Series, and then click Toolbox. The Toolbox opens.

    2. Click the Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

  • Mac OS X

    1. Double-click the HP Utility icon in the Dock. The HP Utility opens.

    2. If more than one product is listed in the utility, click your product under Printers.

    3. Click Align.

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.

Issue: The Power light blinks and the Left or the Right Cartridge light blinks

The Power light blinks, and the Left or the Right Cartridge light blinks. The following light pattern displays on the printer control panel:

  • Battery Status light: Off

  • Battery Charging light: Off

  • Left Cartridge light: Blinking or off

  • Right Cartridge light: Blinking or off

  • Bluetooth light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    There is an issue with either the tri-color cartridge or the black or photo cartridge.

Solutions

Important: Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Remove and then reinsert the cartridge

Improper placement or incorrect installation of the cartridges might cause a cartridge error. Follow these steps to remove and then reinsert the cartridge that corresponds to the blinking cartridge light.

Step one: Remove the cartridge

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the front access cover. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

    CAUTION: Only install cartridges after the carriage stops moving.

  3. Lift the cartridge latch, and then gently remove the cartridge from the carriage.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper contacts on the back of the cartridge or the ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge. Touching the contacts or the nozzles might damage the cartridge.
Step two: Reinsert the cartridge

  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides, with the contacts facing towards the carriage.

  2. Insert the cartridge at a slight angle into the carriage slot, and then gently push until it snaps into place.

    NOTE: Place the tri-color cartridge in the left slot, and the black or photo cartridge in the right slot
  3. Close the cartridge latch. Press the latch down to make sure it rests flat on the cartridge.

  4. Close the front access cover.

    Allow the cartridge initialization process to complete before proceeding.

Step three: Try to print

Try printing another document, and then check if the print quality is satisfactory.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Replace the cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the cartridge that corresponds to the blinking cartridge light.

Step one: Replace the cartridge

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the front access cover. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

  3. Lift the cartridge latch, and then gently remove the cartridge from the carriage.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then pull the pink tab to remove the protective tape.

Step two: Align the cartridges
