DESCRIPTION

When attempting to upgrade an HP ProLiant MicroServer System BIOS, if the Microserver is rebooted or the power is turned off during the update process, the BIOS will be damaged and the system will not reboot.

Note: This issue will occur on any System BIOS upgrade from any version released prior to version 09/30/2010.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant MicroServer when upgrading the System BIOS to a version dated 09/30/2010 (or later).

RESOLUTION

HP recommends upgrading the ProLiant MicroServer System BIOS to Version 09/30/2010 (or later) using the method detailed below. The System BIOS is available from the ProLiant MicroServer download pages:

Note: HP always recommends that server not be interrupted until the flash process has completed successfully.

Perform the following steps:

  1. Select the operating system from the operating systems listed.
  2. Select BIOS - System ROM.

Follow the recommendations below to upgrade the System BIOS.

  • If the System BIOS version is 09/30/2010 (or later), the upgrade can be performed using the ROMPAQ Setup Creation Utility.
  • If the System BIOS Version is 07/28/2010, the upgrade should be performed using the KBD utility.

Upgrading the System BIOS using the KBD utility:

  1. Open the System BIOS release package folder.
  2. Copy the three files (O41040211.ROM, flash.bat, kbd.exe) onto a DOS bootable disk.

  3. Insert the DOS bootable disk into the server and boot into DOS.

  4. At the command line, type: flash.bat

  5. Press "Enter" and wait several minutes for the BIOS to update.

    IMPORTANT: Do not reboot or power off the server during the BIOS update process.
  6. The System BIOS will update successfully.

  7. Reboot the server by pressing "CTRL+ALT+DEL."

Updating the System BIOS using the ROMPAQ Setup Creation Utility:

  1. Flash the System BIOS with the ROMPAQ Setup Creation Utility.
  2. Create a bootable DOS ROMPAQ disk on a USB key, by performing the following steps:
    a. Insert a USB key.
    b. Open the System BIOS release package folder.

    c. Double click the batch file "Rompaq.bat" to execute the file.
    d. When prompted, with a window "HP USB Key ROMPAQ Setup Creation Utility," select the USB Device that will be used to create the ROMPAQ disk and then click the "Start" button.

    e. When prompted with a "warning message," click the "Yes" button to continue.


    f. Press the "OK" key to continue.


    g. Click the "Close" button to exit the application "HP USB Key ROMPAQ Setup Creation Utility."


    The ROMPAQ disk has successfully been created.

  3. Insert this ROMPAQ disk into the server and power on the server. The system will boot automatically to the ROMPAQ disk.



  4. Press "ENTER" to continue the upgrade to the System BIOS. Wait for the update to finish completely.



    IMPORTANT: Do not reboot or power off the server during the BIOS update process.
  5. When the update has completed successfully, reboot the server by pressing "CTRL+ALT+DEL."
