IMPORTANT: The Smart Array Controller firmware update in the Resolution is recommended to prevent a potential issue where the server serial number, product ID, and other configuration settings may be cleared or set to default. HP recommends performing this update at the customer's earliest possible convenience. Neglecting to perform the recommended action and not performing the recommended resolution could result in the potential for subsequent errors to occur. By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended update, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors.

On certain HP ProLiant G5 and G6 series servers configured with a Smart Array P212, P410, P410i, P411, or P812 Controller with Firmware Version 5.06 or Version 5.12 OR configured with a Smart Array P711m or P712m Controller with Firmware Version 5.32, options and settings that are configurable using the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) may be unexpectedly cleared or reset to the default values in non-volatile memory (NVRAM):

  • Server Serial Number
  • Server Product ID
  • Server Asset Text
  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
  • Power-On Password
  • Administrative Password
  • Power-on password
  • Boot Controller Order
  • Standard Boot Order (IPL)

Refer to the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility User Guide for additional information concerning system, user, and default configuration options and settings. The guide is available at the following URL:

The issue can occur when running the above mentioned Smart Array firmware versions and the administrator reduces the number of logical volumes configured on a Smart Array controller. In this scenario, it is possible that the system values such as the server serial number and product ID will be cleared or it is possible for system configuration values to be reset to their default values.

As a result, the server may no longer boot or may attempt to boot from media that was not intended if the Boot Controller Order and/or Standard Boot Order (IPL) is reset to default. In addition, if the server was set for Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) boot, the setting may be disabled for the target NIC when defaults are restored.

The following utilities can be used to determine if the Product and Serial Number have been cleared and in some cases may be able to indicate other server configuration settings:

  • HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM)
  • HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO 2, iLO 3)
  • HP Insight Diagnostics Utility Survey Report
  • ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU)
