HP Deskjet 3520 and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3520 e-All-in-One Printer Series - Setting up the All-in-One (Hardware)

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before you install the printer software on your computer.

Step one: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step two: Unpack the All-in-One

  1. Raise the printer lid, and then remove the packing tape.

  2. Lower the printer lid.

  3. Grasp the handles on either side of the printer, raise the cartridge access door until it locks into place, and then remove the packing tape.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Open the paper tray door, pull out the paper tray, and then remove the packing tape.

  6. Push the paper tray all the way into the printer until it clicks into place.

  7. Remove any tape from the rear of the printer.

Step three: Connect the power cord and turn on the All-in-One

  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug it into a wall outlet.

  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the printer.

Step four: Select your language and country/region

When you first turn on the printer, it prompts you to select your language and region. Follow these steps to set the default language and country/region for your printer.

  1. Touch the Down Arrow () to select the language, and then touch OK.

  2. Touch the Down Arrow ( ) to select Yes, and then touch OK. The Set Country/Region menu opens.

  3. Touch the Down Arrow () to select the country/region, and then touch OK.

  4. Touch the Down Arrow () to select Yes, and then touch OK.

  5. When prompted to install the software, touch OK.

Step five: Install the cartridges

Follow these steps to install the cartridges.

CAUTION: When you first set up the printer you must install the cartridges that shipped in the box. These cartridges are labeled SETUP, and they calibrate your printer before the first print job. Failure to install the SETUP cartridges during the initial printer setup causes an error.
  1. Grasp the handles on either side of the cartridge access door, and then raise the door until it locks into place. The carriage moves to the access area.

  2. Remove the protective cap from the carriage, and then discard the cap.

  3. Pull the orange tab to remove the plastic wrap from a cartridge.

  4. Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off.

  5. With the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks into place. Make sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot.

  6. Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridges.

  7. Close the cartridge access door.

  8. Continue to the next step to load paper, before you touch OK on the control panel.

Step six: Load plain paper

  1. Open the paper tray door.

  2. Pull out the paper tray, and then pull out the paper tray extension.

  3. Slide the paper guides to their outermost positions.

  4. Load a stack of U.S. letter or A4 size paper into the paper tray with the short edge first and the print side down. Push the stack into the tray until it stops.

  5. Slide in the paper guides until they rest against the edges of the paper.

  6. Push the paper tray all the way into the printer until it clicks into place.

    NOTE: Push the paper tray all the way in to avoid an error message.

Step seven: Align the cartridges

  1. On the printer control panel, touch OK. The printer prints an alignment page.

    • Alignment page did not print?

      If the printer did not prompt you to print an alignment page, follow these steps:

      1. On the printer control panel, touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Tools.

      2. Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. The printer prints an alignment page.

      3. Continue to the next step to complete the alignment process.

  2. Open the lid.

  3. Place the alignment page on the scanner glass with the printed side down, and then position it on the front right corner of the glass.

  4. Close the lid, and then touch OK. The printer scans the alignment page.
