Scan From the Control Panel (Including Scan to Email, to a USB Drive, and to a Memory Card) for HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

This document explains how to scan a picture or a document from your printers control panel.

Before you scan, make sure that the computer is on, the printer software is installed, and the HP printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, or through a wireless network connection.

How to scan a photo or document

Follow these steps to scan a general photo or document from the control panel to the computer.

First, select your connection type.

Wireless network connection

Follow these steps to scan from the printer to a computer over a wireless network connection.

Step one: Activate the scan connection to the computer

Follow these steps to activate the scan connection between the printer and the computer.

Mac users: This step is not necessary for Mac operating systems. Skip to the next step.

Important: To send scans from your printer to a computer over a wireless network, you must enable the Activate Scan to Computer connection from the HP software after the computer restarts, hibernates, or enters sleep mode (the hard disk shuts down).

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Choose one of the following methods to open the HP software:

    • Use the desktop icon for all operating systems

      Double-click the printer icon () on your desktop.

    • Windows XP

      1. Click Start ().

      2. Click All Programs, click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your printer series, and then click your printer.

    • Windows Vista

      1. Click the Windows icon ().

      2. Click Programs, click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your printer series, and then click your printer.

    • Windows 7

      1. Click the Windows icon ().

      2. Click All Programs, click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your printer series, and then click your printer.

    • Windows 8

      1. Click the Start button () on the lower left corner of the screen, and then click Search.

      2. Type the name of your printer in the Search box.

      3. Click the tile with your printer's name.

  3. Under Scanner Actions, click Manage Scan to Computer, and then click Enable.

  4. Click the box next to Automatically Start Scan to Computer when I log into Windows to enable automatic activation of the Scan to Computer connection.

Step two: Place the item on the scanner glass or the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

  1. Open the scanner lid.

  2. Load the picture or document:

    CAUTION: Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass to prevent damage to photos.
    • Scanner glass

      Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

    • ADF

      Get Macromedia Flash now.

      Place the item into the document feeder tray with the printed side facing up and the top edge going into the tray first. Adjust the paper width guides to fit the item.

Step three: Scan from the printer control panel

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ().

  2. Touch the computer icon to scan to the connected computer.

  3. Touch the name of the computer that you want to save the scan to.

  4. Touch one of the following scan options that is applicable to the document or image that you want to scan.

    Scan option
    Description
    Photo
    Use this setting to scan pictures and images.
    Document
    Use this setting to scan text documents that will not be editable.
  5. Touch the File Type that you want to scan to, and then touch OK.

  6. Touch Scan. The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination specified in the settings.

USB connection

Follow these steps to scan to a computer with a USB cable connection.

Step one: Place the item on the scanner glass or the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

  1. Open the scanner lid.

  2. Load the picture or document:

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ().

  2. Touch the computer icon to scan to the connected computer.

  3. Touch the name of the computer that you want to save the scan to.

  4. Touch one of the following scan options that is applicable to the document or image that you want to scan.

    Scan option
    Description
    Photo
    Use this setting to scan pictures and images.
    Document
    Use this setting to scan text documents that will not be editable.
  5. Touch the File Type that you want to scan to, and then touch OK.

  6. Touch Scan. The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination specified in the settings.

How to scan directly to email (wireless connections only)

You can use the Scan to Email feature on your printer to scan documents and photos and automatically send them to one or more email addresses as attachments.

Step one: Activate the scan connection to the computer

      2. Type the name of your printer in the Search box.

      3. Click the tile with your printer's name.

  3. Under Scanner Actions, click Manage Scan to Computer, and then click Enable.

  4. Click the box next to Automatically Start Scan to Computer when I log into Windows to enable automatic activation of the Scan to Computer connection.

Step two: Enable Web Services

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch the ePrint icon () or press

  2. Touch Yes to accept the terms, and then touch Yes again to update the printer.

  3. On the Sign up required screen, touch OK. An information page prints.

    The information page contains the printer code that you will use to register your printer with HP ePrint in the next step

Step three: Register with HP ePrint

These steps apply to the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Germany.

At HP Connected, you can manage your print jobs and change your ePrint settings. When you register at HP Connected, your printer's unique email address is provided to you. Follow these steps to register at HP Connected.

  1. Go to HP Connected , and then sign in to your account.

  2. Click the Devices tab (if not already selected).

  3. Click Add a Device.

  4. Type the printer's claim code found on the Web Services confirmation page, and then click Add.

  5. Click OK. The You have successfully added your printer window opens.

    NOTE: HP sends an email to the account you used during the registration process. Open the email, click Confirm email address, and then sign in to HP Connected to complete the verification step.
  6. Continue to the next step to customize your printer's email address (optional).

These steps apply to all countries/regions except the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Germany.

At HP ePrintCenter, you can manage your print jobs, browse apps, and change your ePrint settings. When you register at ePrintCenter, your printer's unique email address is provided to you. Follow these steps to register at ePrintCenter.

  1. Go to ePrintCenter , and then sign in to your account.

  2. In the Add a Printer to your Account window, type the printer claim code from the Web Services confirmation page in the Enter Printer Code text box.

  3. Click OK. The You have successfully added your printer window opens.

    NOTE: Keep this window open, and then continue to the next step to customize your printer's email address (optional).

Step four: Create a Scan to Email account

  1. Touch Scan, and then touch Email.

  2. Read 'About Scan to Email,' and then touch OK.

  3. Enter your email address by touching the input bar which opens the onscreen keyboard, and then touch Continue. A PIN is sent to the email address entered.

  4. Touch Continue, and then enter the PIN from the email sent by HP.

    NOTE: Touch Remember Me and make sure the box next to it is checked. This stores the email address for future use.
  5. Touch Log In.

    • If you do not remember your PIN, touch Forgot PIN?.

      Touch New PIN if you want a new PIN sent by email, or touch Cancel to try entering the PIN again.

    • If you checked the Remember Me box, you have two options.

      • Select Auto-login to store the PIN. This is a low security option best used when you are the only person using the printer.

      • Select Store Email to store the email address, but not the PIN. The PIN must be entered anytime you want to scan to email. This is a higher security option best used if multiple people use the printer to scan.

  6. You can continue and scan to email now, or touch Home to exit the setup process.

Step five: Log in and select scan options

Follow these steps to log in to your Scan to Email account, and then select the correct scan options.

  1. Touch Scan, and then touch Email.

  2. Select your account, and then touch Continue.

  3. If necessary, enter your PIN, and then touch Log In.

  4. Touch Photo or Document.

    • Select Photo to send a single page or photo as a JPG file. The document or photo must be scanned from the scanner glass. Select the size of the page or photo placed on the scan glass.

    • Select Document to scan single or multiple page documents to a PDF file. You can scan from the scanner glass or from the ADF. All scans sent from the scanner glass are single-page scans.

    NOTE: If you select Photo and load a document into the ADF, the result is an error message. You can only send one page or photo per email when using the Photo setting.
  5. If you want to send a photo or document to an email address other than your own, touch Modify Recipients.

    1. Touch Add to enter a new recipient to the available list.

    2. Touch the checkbox to select or deselect an available recipient(s), and then touch Done.

  6. Review the information, and then touch Continue.

Step six: Place the item on the scanner glass or the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray and send the scan

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

  1. Open the scanner lid.

  2. Load the picture or document:

  3. Touch Scan to Email to finish and send the scan.
