HP ProBook 4545s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

This document pertains only to HP ProBook 4545s Notebook PC with the following case design:

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for HP ProBook 4545s Notebook PC.

Phillips-head P1 screwdriver

Minimum skill level

The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

NOTE: Part numbers are subject to change.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP .

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Remove the battery.

Remove the service door.

Remove the three 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a keyboard icon on the base enclosure.
NOTE: If the heat shield has been removed, only two 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screw need to be removed.

Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.

Slide the keyboard towards the front of the notebook to release it.

Using finger or a flat bladed non-marring tool, gently lift up on the rear edge of the keyboard and slide the keyboard towards the rear of the notebook to release the tabs at the front of the keyboard.
NOTE: Do not lift the keyboard further away from the notebook than necessary to access the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.

Gently lift up on the locking bar on the keyboard ZIF connector and remove the keyboard ribbon cable.
NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.

Remove the keyboard.

Keyboard replacement instructions

Place the keyboard upside-down on the top cover so that the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector are accessible.

Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.

Carefully turn over the keyboard and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.

Slide the keyboard towards the rear of the notebook to re-engage the locking tabs underneath.

Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.

Replace the three 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screws to secure the keyboard to the notebook.
NOTE: If the heat shield has been removed, only two 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screw need to be replaced. The third screw will be replaced with the heat shield.

Replace the service door.

Replace the battery.
