HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer - The Fax Test Report Fails, But the Fax Appears to Function Correctly

Issue

The fax send and receive functions are working correctly, yet the fax test reports a failure.

What is the Fax Test Report?

The fax setup test is used to check the status of the printer and to make sure that it is set up correctly for faxing. The fax setup test does the following:

  • Tests the fax hardware

  • Tests the status of your phone line connection

  • Checks that the phone cord is plugged into the correct port

  • Makes sure that the correct type of phone cord is connected to the printer

  • Checks for a dial tone

  • Checks for an active phone line

The printer prints a report with the results of the test. The fax setup test report indicates either PASS, or that one or more item has FAILED the test. The fax test can fail under the following conditions:

  • When there is a failure in one or more of the items listed above

  • In some rare situations it may incorrectly indicate that the fax setup test has failed

Contextual Wrapper

Solution one: Check for a false error condition

To check for a false error situation, send and receive a fax from your printer.

NOTE: False failures sometimes occur, particularly in a fax-over-IP environment or when a downstream device such as a telephone or answering machine is connected to the 2-EXT port of the printer.
  • If the fax is successful , ignore the test result.
  • If the fax is not successful , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Use the HP Fax Test Service

HP has a fax test number to test HP fax printers. This is available in the U.S. only. The telephone number for this service is 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963). The fax service receives faxes and returns faxes to the number contained in the fax header.

NOTE: Non U.S. customers can simply try sending or receiving a fax again from the initial location where it failed to test functionality.
  1. Make sure that the fax header contains the full 10-digit telephone number of your HP fax printer, including the area code. To modify the fax header, use the following steps:

    1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Settings .

    2. Touch Fax Setup , and then touch Basic Fax Setup .

    3. Touch Fax Header .

    4. Enter your personal or company name and fax number, and then touch Done .

  2. Dial 1-888-HPFaxme, and then send a fax to the HP Fax Test Service.

  • If a return fax arrives within 5 to 7 minutes, the fax is setup successfully and you do not need to proceed.

  • If a return fax does not arrive within 5 to 7 minutes, there might be a problem with the setup of the fax machine. Continue to the next step.

Solution three: Follow the instructions on the Fax Test Report

When the fax test fails, the fax test report provides more information on how to fix any problems found. Perform the steps listed on the report, and then run the fax test again.
