DESCRIPTION

The notebook may not recognize some USB 3.0 devices if they are connected to a docking station. If the boot order in BIOS specifies booting first from a connected USB 3.0 device, that device is skipped in the event that it cannot be recognized. Additionally, the USB 3.0 device does not appear in the F9 menu.

The USB 3.0 devices function as expected in Microsoft Windows once the operating system loads.

RESOLUTION

This is a known issue with USB 3.0 technology. Some USB 3.0 devices take a longer time than others to be recognized by the notebook BIOS. Because the docking station is a USB hub, it, too, can add to this delay. As a result, if the delay becomes too large, then the notebook BIOS skips the USB 3.0 device in order to proceed with boot up.

To resolve this issue, connect the USB 3.0 device directly to the notebook USB port instead of the docking station.

Alternatively, do the following:

  1. Restart the notebook and press F10 to enter the BIOS setup screens.
  2. Go to System Configuration > Boot Options and change the Startup Menu Delay to 5 seconds.
  3. Under Boot Options > Legacy Mode, move USB Harddrive to the first position in the list.
  4. Save and exit.

The 5-second delay allows the BIOS enough time to recognize the USB 3.0 device. If the device is bootable, then the notebook can also boot from it once it is recognized.

Note: No BIOS solution for this issue is pending.
