HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i and HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i Controllers are shipped with RAID enabled (by default) and require device drivers from HP.COM in order to use RAID functionality.
HP strongly recommends RAID protection of data and/or boot volumes when using RAID capable controllers, such as HP Dynamic Smart Array Controllers. However, the HP Dynamic Smart Array Controller driver for Linux and VMware (hpvsa) is not included in the operating system distribution media, as some customers may expect.
HP Dynamic Smart Array Controllers, which provide the same level of RAID protection as other HP Smart Array Controllers, differ from the other controllers by moving the proprietary RAID algorithms into an operating system device driver. These RAID algorithms, which run in the firmware of traditional Smart Array RAID controllers, now run in the server CPU and memory space as part of the Dynamic Smart Array closed source device driver software.
HP strongly recommends enabling RAID protection by downloading the HP driver (hpvsa). The following related article on the Red Hat website provides additional information to users:
HP has a long history and established working relationship with the Linux community to incorporate functionality for the majority of HP devices directly into the upstream Linux kernel, and to provide timely updates to Linux distribution vendors for inclusion in their in-box device drivers. Because the HP Dynamic Smart Array Controller technology is owned exclusively by HP, the device driver for Linux and VMware (hpvsa) is only available from HP.COM, instead of the operating system media.
Regardless of the delivery method used, HP is fully commited to providing full support of these drivers for use with the supported Linux and VMware distributions.
This does not indicate a change for Windows customers because HP already provides closed source drivers for Microsoft Windows Server operating systems on all products.
HP provides binary drivers for HP Dynamic Smart Array Controllers for all supported operating system releases and updates that are supported by the ProLiant Gen8 servers that support these controllers. These are listed on the HP operating system support matrix at the following URL:
Before installing the operating system on ProLiant servers equipped with Dynamic Smart Array Controllers, download the HP Dynamic Smart Array driver from HP.COM, which can be located using the following navigation:
- Go to

The HP Dynamic Smart Array Controller driver for Linux and VMware (hpvsa) is also available in HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2012.06.0 (B) (or later) at the following URL:
Linux and VMware customers who do not require RAID functionality may disable RAID mode using the procedures outlined in the
