Added "SPP Hot Fix" to the title and added SPP Hot Fix information to the Resolution.
Original Document Release.
IMPORTANT : The HP Smart Array Controller firmware upgrade provided in the Resolution is recommended to prevent the Smart Array Controller from becoming unresponsive during POST or Runtime. HP recommends performing this upgrade at the customer's earliest possible convenience. Neglecting to perform the recommended action and not performing the recommended resolution could result in the potential for subsequent errors to occur.

The HP ProLiant server models with Embedded Smart Array P220i or P420i Controllers listed under Platforms Affected (below), in the following configuration, may halt during Power-On Self-Test (POST) or runtime with Lockup Code 0x13 . The Lockup Code 0x13 event will be indicated by the appearance of error 1719 during POST. Additionally, the associated errors 1783 , 1793 , or 1797 may appear after restarting the server, during POST.

  • The system is configured with eight (or fewer) direct attached drives.
  • The system is NOT configured with SAS/SATA Solid State Drives (SSDs).
  • The system is NOT configured with a SAS/SATA backplane expander.

When this occurs, access to any attached drives will be lost. If the drives host the operating system, the server may fail to boot, or may halt during operation.

When the server is restarted, the lockup event will be indicated by the following POST error:

  • 1719 - Slot X Drive Array - A controller failure event occurred prior to this power-up. (Previous lock up code = 0x13)

Additionally, the following POST errors may also appear:

  • 1783 - Slot X Drive Array controller failure
  • 1793 - Slot X Drive Array - Data in Write-Back Cache has been Lost
  • 1797 - Slot X Drive Array - Cache Data Backup or Restore Previously Failed or Cache Read Error Occurred and data in Cache has been lost

Note: This issue is more likely to occur when running memory and processor intensive applications, but it can also occur during POST.

Any HP ProLiant server with an Embedded Smart Array P220i or P420i Controller running Smart Array Controller Firmware Version 3.42 (or earlier) that is listed under Platforms Affected (below) in the following configuration:

  • The system is configured with eight (or fewer) direct attached drives.
  • The system is NOT configured with SAS/SATA Solid State Drives (SSDs).
  • The system is NOT configured with a SAS/SATA backplane expander.
